PostSubject: MARCH 2007 - An In-Depth Look   Thu Mar 01, 2007 9:54 pm

Hello class, Wave

My name is Ms. Beadle and I will be talking about special events, observances and other special days of the calendar every month. Since there are a lot of events each month, I will break down the information by posting events each beginning of the week, so that I can have several posts instead of one huge post covering everything. I hope you enjoy these posts and I also welcome any help or ideas you can give. Type

We begin with the month of March.

Aquamarine is March’s birthstone. Named by the Romans about 2,000 years ago, its name is derived from the Latin word aqua, meaning "water," and marina, meaning "sea". This stone was known to protect sailors, as well as guarantee a safe voyage.

Jonquil is the flower of March.

Now, here are some facts/events that cover the first week of March.
(March 1st to March 3rd)

*This week in history*

The first US National Park (Yellowstone National Park) was created by an act of Congress in March 1, 1872.
See Introduction to Yellowstone Nat’l Park Video

The first FM radio station aired March 1, 1941 - W47NB in Nashville, Tennessee.

On March 2, 1836, Texas declared its independence from Mexico and became the Republic of Texas.

*Holidays & Observances*

March 2nd is Read Across America Day (Observed the week of Dr. Seuss's birthday). Click on the pic below for more information.

So grab a book and join the celebration! reader

March 3rd is National Anthem Day. Star Spangled Banner (written by Francis Scott Key) was made the U. S. National Anthem in 1931. Listen Here

*Next post will be done Sunday, March 4th!

March 4th to March 10th

*This week in history*

*Holidays & Observances*

March 6th (Tuesday) is Dentists’ Day.
Dentist's Day is a day to display a big, toothy smile. After all, your Dentist plays a role in that big, bright smile. He's an important person in keeping your smile bright, and your teeth and mouth healthy.

March 8th (Thursday) International Women's Day
Celebrated on 8 March, International Women's Day (IWD) is the global day connecting all women around the world and inspiring them to achieve their full potential.
Click here for more information: http://www.internationalwomensday.com/

March 9th (Friday) Cabin Fever Day
What is Cabin Fever you may ask? According to Wikipedia.com, "cabin fever is a condition that produces restlessness and irritability from being in a confined space". For example, we had not been outside too much because of the winter weather.

"The term possibly originated in the United States at the time when settlers would be snowed in to their log cabins and had to wait for the spring thaw in order to travel to town. Another possible source for this phrase could be that during an outbreak of some disease, people who had a fever were confined to a cabin as quarantine. Most likely, the phrase may be associated with ocean-crossing sailing ships in which passengers had to endure weeks and months of slow travel while living in cramped cabins below deck."
*So on this day, go out and do something nice. Take a walk, visit the library, work on your garden, go for a bike ride.

March 10th (Saturday) Alexander Graham Bell Day

*Celebrity Birthdays & Anniversaries of Deaths *

Andy Gibb, 1958
Shaquille O'Neal, 1972
Freddie Prinze, Jr., 1976
Emanuel Lewis, 1971
Chuck Norris, 1940
Sharon Stone, 1958

Christopher Wallace (Notorious B.I.G.), rapper - Died in a driveby shooting on March 9, 1997 in Los Angeles at the age of 24.

*Next post will be done Sunday, March 11th!
