Oliver Hardy never uttered the lines, "Well, Here's another fine mess you've gotten me into," in any film. He did, however, say many times: "Here's another NICE mess you've gotten me into." How this got started remains a mystery, although it probably originated from the duo's top notch 1930 short ANOTHER FINE MESS. Guess an English teacher got on Hal Roach's back about proper grammar. Below is a list of the films in which Oliver says those famous words: NICE MESS or variations of.

Here's one of Stan Laurel's home movies. The first minute or so shows his little daughter Lois reacting to Ollie. Lois showed this clip on a TV show several years ago, and I remember her saying all she knew was that this was the big, nasty guy who was always abusing her dad on the silver screen... and now, yikes, here he was at their house! Laughing

Stanley is probably telling her, "Honey, do you see that nice house we live in? Me getting pushed around by that big guy is what paid for that." GreenSmile
