Do the Ingalls stay in WG in Season 9 or do they move?

While I don't want to get too far ahead in the polls, this is one that will be a huge factor in determining the way the Season 9 rewrite is played out.

I was surprised to see that it was an overwhelming succes to the Ingalls moving to De Smet...until I realized I was the first one to vote! LOL ROTFL

I voted for move to De Smet. If they don't move at all, then everything from the season will be different (well, mostly anyway). While I am sad to see them go, I would like to explore their lives in the city and have them come back to WG for visits too. And, if they are moving - why not to De Smet and be true to the books? That's my 2 cents

I voted along with you guys. Why Burr Oak was chosen for the show is beyond me. Unless they were looking for a settled town, instead of De Smet where the Ingalls family were one of the first settlers.

I voted for move to Burr Oak, if only to make the job of the rewriters easier. Although I would have liked for them to stay in Walnut Grove, it would change most of the episodes. How big was De Smet at this time? I had the impression it was small, maybe even smaller than Walnut Grove. I think the Ingalls need to go to a city at least as big as Winoka. Otherwise, Albert would not have fallen in with the wrong crowd.

Very good point John. How could Charles go to a tiny town--unless he worked for the railroad. He wouldn't be able to support his family there either.

But doesn't forget that these new little towns near the railroad could have "bad people" who would come and go without letting any trace about who they were and such. If you read Laura's book you'll notice how afraid Ma was of her girls meeting some kind of men that were not recommandable, specially when they were camping and working for the railroad. Caroline never allowed Carrie and Laura to go to far after the sun would dissapear. She was very strict about it.

This could have been an excellent ambiance to get Albert interested in drugs.

I was wondering about this, too. I guess we could have De Smet become more of "a big city" for the sake of our rewrite - like Vanesa said, there could be "bad" people moving into that town too.

The books are great. Very different than the TV Show, but very, very interesting. There you have great insights about real life back then and what kind of people made the Westward great movement. Laura is very faithful to the real events and she never hides that there were good people (most of them) and bad people among those who are going further and further West. Robbers and horse thieves were everywhere, and murders where not so rare, as you may see when you are aware about stories like the Bender's from Kansas.

So, yes...Even staying in Walnut Grove Albert could had been influenced by bad guys and get into drugs problems. So, for me it's the same that the Ingallses could remain in Walnut Grove, going to De Smet or to Burr Oak. This won't change the fact that Albert culd have a bad experience with bad people. Any desition in this sense wouldn't bother me if the main storyline would not be too complicate to write. GreenSmile

I was only suggesting De Smet in order of being more faithful to Laura's true story. But any of these three towns are allright, I think.
