Laura Ingalls Wilder certainly did not expect
That the stories of her childhood would gain so much respect
Nor did she know that children near and far
Would many years later know who The Ingall’s are
But let us make a joyful noise for her writing talent
She allowed us to see the light of prairie life, which is quite gallant
A new beginning came from her reminiscing tales
And thanks to TV, the town of walnut grove still prevails
A portrait of love has grown for the characters etched in our minds
For many ages and generations of all kinds
There are episodes that help lost ones find their way
Others that have characters say I do again, so love will not stray
Divorce, walnut grove style really is just a farce
For we all know, endings that are not happy ones are very sparse
We’ve seen battles between the in-laws and shouts of fight team fight!
And watching Oleson versus Oleson and the Nephews is such a delight
We let out a silent cry for Sylvia and all that she went through
Hoping that blind justice will fall where it is due
But come, let us reason together as we celebrate the past
For saying, “Goodbye, Mrs. Wilder” will certainly not last
These beloved characters are all based from real people and earlier years
Except for the character of Albert, which one day appears
He has no connection to Mrs. Wilder’s childhood days
But we grow to love him in so many ways
We follow him through to the end of the show
Where we must say, “Farewell, dearest Albert, I’ll miss you so”
We are sad at the conclusion, but life goes on
For we can watch the show in reruns from dusk until dawn
