Peter and Eliza Quiner

Peter Ingalls was the oldest child of Landsford and Laura Ingalls and brother to Charles (Pa). He was the last to marry and for his bride he picked Caroline's (Ma) younger sister Eliza Ann. They were married in June 5, 1861. Of the Landsford Ingalls children and Quiner children, two brothers and one sister married one brother and two sisters.

Peter Ingalls married Eliza Ann Quiner
Charles Ingalls married Caroline Quiner
Polly Ingalls married Henry Quiner

I didn't know they had colored photos back then. Plus---- nine times out of ten----they never smiled when getting pictures taken back then. Was it cause they had bad teeth? Or they just didn't feel it was proper to smile. It's a great picture. Peter and Charles really looked like each other.

I think the reason they didn't smile is because it took so long to take pictures back then. You had to hold still for a long time in order for the film to capture the shot. I wonder when color photos were first available.

It was most likely hand-colored/painted. Like this daguerreotype:

You're right..."modern" color photos weren't around back then.

And I read that it took so long for the photos to be taken that nobody felt like smiling anymore. I don't know how true that is, though.

That makes sence Cheryl, Savannah. Did they get their picture taken often? I love looking at old photos from that time era.

I doubt everyday people could afford to have their picture taken often. They probably only did it for special occasions until camera came out.

The first color plate, Autochrome invented by the French Lumiere brothers, readched the market in 1907. It was based on a "screen-plate" filter made of dryed dots of potato starch and was the only color film on the market until 1932.
Many advances happend along the years, but instant color flim was introduced by Polaroid in 1963.

I'm sure the painting of photos took alot of families interest before the years of color shots. My own great-grandma threw a fit to have her eyes painted blue. ( She was only 6 at the time.) She told her Ma that if she didn't pay the photographer the extra nickel she would run away. Ma did it, and its a story we have told to anyone that gazes at that photo.
