Who was supposed to play Pa?

I am new to this site, but I have been watching little house since I was a little girl. I have the entire DVD collection and just started watching them from the beginning again. I have recently found lots on youtube, thanks to this site...and have spent way to much time checking out all the LH stuff!
My question is, if Michale Landon was only supposed to write and direct LH, does anyone know who was actually cast to play Pa Ingalls? It says in the booklet with the DVD set, that the actor was late and so Michael Landon stepped in! Good thing...it would NOT be the same show without him!

The only sure thing I know is that Ed Friendly contacted Michael Landon to direct the show, since he was impressed by his direction job in some "Bonanza's" chapters...But I think he also tought that he must play Pa.

If I remember right, which I can't confirm now that PT is no longer online, the rumor that another actor was tagged to play Pa was merely that, a rumor started by Michael Landon.

That's what I was thinking, too, Cheryl. But I couldn't remember for sure! I thought that I remembered reading an interview where one of the producers had been asked that, and he said that it wasn't true - that Michael Landon was their first and only choice.

Patrick Loubatière, in his book "La Petite Maison dans la Prairie" ( Alas!only available in French No ) said that the only Pa was always Michael Landon. Ed Friendly, the producer of the show, choiced him not only as a director but also as the main actor in it. It seems that Michael Landon also has a decisive influence in the casting , choicing the actors and actress that would act at "Little House". It was him who choiced Karen Grassle to Play Ma, and the two Melissas. He noticed that they were exactly as the characters they were playing in real life, and that Karen Grassle had "all to be a pioneer woman"...And he even had a little discussion with Ed Friendly (the first one among others to come) for he wanted Victor French as Mr. Edwards and Friendly opposed that in the books, Edwards was very different than French: it was a little thin man and Victor..well, we all know how Victor was! Laughing

when I first started watching LHOTP, I thought Pa didn't look like anything I had pictured from the books, but now, nobody else could play the part of pa! Though, I can't see anybody else playing any of the roles as well as all the actors did. They played their parts well. :o)

Well, you've said it! Even a purist like me -I'm an historian and historians has their own professional deformations Wink - cannot imagine anyone else than THEM - I mean, the whole cast -portraying our "Little House" friends. And even if at first I wouldn't accept such "made up characters" as Albert, the Garveys, Widow Snider and Sanderson's children, the Garveys etc...now, I shouldn't accept an Ingalls show without them. Am I crazy? Maybe... Huh? But LHOTP was so greatly done that I can't imagine it otherwise than it is.

I don't find the books boring at all. I love them. Maybe better than the show. But the case is that I will not accept any LHOTP show ,other than Michael Landon's one. We-ell....perhaps I will watch other shows based on the books if done, but I will ever said that Michael Landon's "Little House" was better. GreenSmile
