New Kids on the Block to reunite

They may be pushing 40, but the New Kids are returning to the block. The Boston boy band New Kids on the Block, which sold 70 million albums in the 1980s and early 1990s, has reunited and plans to release a new album and go on tour. The reunion comes 20 years after the release of the group's multi-platinum album, "Hanging Tough."

The group released a new photo Wednesday and reportedly will appear on the Today show Friday morning — the same time an unmarked countdown clock on http://www.nkotb.com ends.

"The fan response to this has been incredible," band member Donnie Wahlberg told the Boston Herald.

Wahlberg said he was convinced to get back together with his former bandmates — Joey McIntyre, brothers Jordan and Jonathan Knight and Danny Wood — when they decided to record new music. Wahlberg said he wrote 80 percent of the new material with McIntyre and Jordan Knight.

"I had no interest going out on a nostalgia tour and singing the same material," said Wahlberg, 38.

But he added, "We absolutely will do the old songs for sure."

Producer Maurice Starr formed the group in Boston in the 1980s, hoping to recreate the success he had with another teen group from the city, New Edition.

At the height of their popularity, New Kids sold out world tours, marketed millions of dollars in merchandise and spawned a Saturday morning cartoon.

The group disbanded in 1994. Wahlberg has acted on television and in movies, while Jordan Knight, McIntyre and Wood released solo albums. Jonathan Knight became a real estate developer.

I heard about this a while back. OMG does Jonathan still look hot! Did you know he dated the singer Tiffany back in the 80's?

Jonathan used to be the cutest one with Joey in second place, being the little kid, he was adorable. But I must say, he's turned out to be a fine lookin' gentleman! Wowza! Love

But, of course, Donny was cute, too!

I would rather watch the video with just them doing their dance moves. The jumping to watch them chase girls, I could do without. It was cute, though, when Joey jumps in the driver's seat and takes off. I heard that he had fun doing that! GreenSmile

Wow... I actually remember these guys a little *too* well. I'm pretty sure if I went digging through some old boxes I'd find one or two of their cassettes stashed away. And what's really bad is I can still recite the entire rap sequence to "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" having not heard the song in well over a decade.

But I probably shouldn't have admitted that.

These guys were big. I also remember their cartoon show.

But to be honest, I'm surprised they'd be going through with a tour. I thought Jonathan Knight had some serious panic attack/agoraphobic problems when it came to large crowds. Sure hope he's doing better if they're serious about taking up the stage again.

Awww, the memories of them all. I think of all of them, I am most surprised about Donny. Since he's been on TV, I thought he'd left the group way behind him.

Jon, I had never heard that about Jonathan. Can you shed further light on it? If that was the case, being so popular at that time must have been really hard on him! Unsure

My memory about this might be shaky so don't take everything I say to the grave, but here’s what I remember about Jonathan's situation:

A few years back there was an Oprah Winfrey episode I watched that had both Jonathan and Jordan Knight on it. Jordan talked a lot about his past and how he got involved in music and the business, but a part of the show was dedicated to talking about Jonathan’s battle with his panic attacks and what I think was agoraphobia, and they actually had him there to talk about it in person. I remember him saying something to the affect that he’d had real anxiety problems after a lot of the shows they did and that after NKOTB was over with he had basically retreated to isolating himself and spent a lot of that time in bed just to get away from everything. I don’t remember how long he said he went through that, but he may have been suffering from depression, too.

I also remember that he looked like he was still struggling with a lot of the anxieties while he was doing this interview (which may have been the first interview he’d done in years given his state, but I honestly don’t know that for sure). He seemed very fidgety and very nervous while he was doing the show and if I remember right he had trouble looking Oprah in the eye while he was talking.

I believe they also mentioned that they had been set to do a NKOTB reunion at a music awards show… but Jonathan had to bail out of it because he just wasn’t in any state to get back on stage. Anyway, I think this has a lot to do with why he was sometimes portrayed as the “shy” member of the group… it may have just been too much for him at the time.

So I trust he’s doing a lot better now and I imagine his signing on to do this tour is a good sign, if anything. The interview, like I said, was a few years ago. Maybe 2002? I haven't heard anything about him since then... so I hope he's doing better!

Thanks for the info., Jon. Very interesting. I wonder if maybe he's on medication or something to help him and therefore able to get back with the group. That would help explain the reunion.

As for me, I'm looking forward to seeing them together again! GreenSmile
