“The Lord is my Shepherd”

Caroline gives birth to a baby boy. The boy dies soon afterwards. Because Laura believes it was her fault that the baby died, she leaves home and goes on a trip to get closer to God. On the mountain she climbs, she meets Jonathan. Jonathan makes a wooden cross for Laura. One time while she is washing in the creek, the cross falls off and floats downstream. Her pa discovers the cross and is able to figure out where she was.

This is such an emotionally packed episode. It must have been tough for the Charles & Caroline to loose their son. It was great that they could lean on God to help them through this.

And Laura... she was so little and though she had caused his death. It was not an easy time for the Ingalls... first the baby and then Laura running away. I loved how Charles found the cross and was able to find her. That scene when they run into each other's arms... wow... what great acting and chemistry. Michael, Karen and Melissa shone in this episode. Superb! Applause Thumbsup Thumbsup

I love this episode! My favorite I think. Great acting, great drama and super guest - Ernest Borgnine was awesome as Jonathan.

Wasn't Michael great at showing emotion?

My problem is that I see NO chemistry at all between Mary and their fictional parents. However, Laura and Albert had a lot of emotional scenes with Charles and Caroline...

I never saw the second part of this episode, but I did see all of the first part. I have to say that I understand why Charles was paying more attention to his son than he was to Laura. He had always wanted a son and he was so happy that he finally had a son. Laura was not right to wish that her brother would die but then again it is understandable that she was upset.

I agree. The very best part is the end of part two when Charles finds Laura, but the rest of part two is kinda boring. I tend to see this one on TV more than any other episode. After seeing it so many times, I've come to like it more than I used to.

This episode in my opinion, could very well be the crowning acheivement for Michael Landon. His values we're sacred, and they were on display in every aspect within this episode. A brillant performance by all who were part of this special episode. I have the entire series on dvd, and I would not give it away for all the money in the world. Many Blessings.

What a rollercoaster of emotions in this 2 parter, not only for the actors but for us viewers as well. I think Mike, Karen and Melissa proved what outstanding actors they were in this episode and I'm sure it must have been mentally draining for them. I know Mike and Melissa's scene at the end was great but the one that always sets me off is just after the baby dies, when Caroline and Charles recite The Lord Is My Shepherd. bawling

Another powerful scene in this one is when Charles breaks down just after stepping off the horse to fill the canteen. Mr. Edwards just stands there, not knowing what to do or say. And then, just when all hope seems lost, the cross comes floating in as Charles is filling the canteen.
