The sound system failed during The Star-Spangled Banner before the Toronto-Nashville game, but Toronto fans picked up the slack.  Gave me goosebumps!

bawling That was great!   They might've given the song more respect than most people who are citizens of the USA.  With having 2 of my 3 boys in the military, I can't listen to that song without crying.  Thank you Canada!

It really is a beautiful melody, but lyrically, I get lost after "our home and native land." Smile

But I still have always loved Canada. Wonderful country. loveheart

I love the Star Spangled Banner. My music teacher always called it the SSB. I love the history that it remembers. I'm not a Leafs fan but had I been at the Rogers Centre that night, I would have sung the SSB with all my heart.
O Canada is special too, my heart soars just by listening to a few notes of it.

God has surely blessed our two countries.

The SSB was written during the shelling of Fort McHenry by the British in the War of 1812.  The language is so elaborate that I'm sure some people hear it without actually knowing what it's saying.  It uses a lot of words to express a very simple thought.  Smile

Oh say, can you see
by the dawn's early light
what so proudly we hailed
at the twilight's last gleaming;
whose broad stripes and bright stars
through the perilous fight,
o'er the ramparts we watched
were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets' red glare,
the bombs bursting in air,
gave proof through the night
that our flag was still there.

Oh say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

TRANSLATION:

Now that it's morning, can you see if our flag is still flying the way it was yesterday evening?  We could see it was there during the night, because the exploding artillery shells lit it up.  Is it still there?

Our National Anthem brings tears to eyes, and more so now that 2 of my 3 boys are in the military.  Rob posted what is sung at the beginning of many events, but did you know there are more verses?  It is good we only sing the one, because the way the 'stars' mess up the words while singing at the big events, there is no way they could get through 3-4 more verses.  batEyes  Ooops  HeeHee

O say can you see by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country, should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation.
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave![12]

 Cover of sheet music for "The Star-Spangled Banner", transcribed for piano by Ch. Voss, Philadelphia: G. Andre & Co., 1862
Additional Civil War period lyrics
In indignation over the start of the American Civil War, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.[13] added a fifth stanza to the song in 1861 which appeared in songbooks of the era.[14]

When our land is illumined with liberty's smile,
If a foe from within strikes a blow at her glory,
Down, down with the traitor that tries to defile
The flag of the stars, and the page of her story!
By the millions unchained,
Who their birthright have gained
We will keep her bright blazon forever unstained;
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave,
While the land of the free is the home of the brave.

Alternative lyrics
In a version hand-written by Francis Scott Key in 1840, the third line reads "Whose bright stars and broad stripes, through the clouds of the fight"

Ohhh, yes! With all the drawn-out notes and vocal calisthenics, the announcer would have to say, "That concludes the National Anthem. Unfortunately, we don't have time for the game now..." HeeHee

My dad say's some of the people the hockey games get to sing either America's or Canada's National Anthem are not great singer's. I'M not a hockey fan either.

American's National Anthem is it not harder to singer them Canada's? That is what i heard.

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

At our church we sing a song called Lord of the Lands to the tune of O Canada. This is the world version. We usually sing "make Canada Thine own."

Lord of the lands, beneath Thy bending skies,
On field and flood, where’er our banner flies,
Thy people lift their hearts to Thee,
Their grateful voices raise:
May e’er this thankful country be
A temple to Thy praise.
Thy will alone let all enthrone;

Refrain

Lord of the lands, make all our hearts Thine own:
Lord of the lands, make all our hearts Thine own!

Almighty Love, by Thy mysterious power,
In wisdom guide, with faith and freedom dower;
Be ours a nation evermore
That no oppression blights,
Where justice rules from shore to shore,
From lakes to mountain heights.
May love alone for wrong atone;

Refrain

Lord of the worlds, with strong eternal hand,
Hold us in honor, truth and self-command;
The loyal heart, the constant mind,
The courage to be true,
Our wide extending empire bind,
And all the earth renew.
Thy Name be known through every zone;

Lord of the worlds, make all the lands Thine own:
Lord of the worlds, make all the lands Thine own!
