That dog...

I love dogs.........really. Over the years, I've worked with abused dogs, frightened dogs, agressive dogs. . . . . stupid dogs (lol!) and have always been able to make a connection with them, and make friends with them - usually within just a few minutes. . . . . . And I'd never met a dog that actually scared me. . . . . until now.

There's a dog not too far from here who, a couple of weeks ago charged at me.....then last week snarled and lunged at me - and then last night tried to bite my leg. The dog has gotten loose and chased a child into the refuge of a neighbor's home - but the owner refuses to see anything to worry about. He says that his dog is just a little grumpy. His dog is dangerous, not just grumpy. And because the dog hasn't hurt anyone (yet) nothing can be done. I should have let the beast bite me, then something could be done! (No....I'm not going to get offline and go antagonize the dog into biting me.........although...LOL)

What's worse is that there are children in the home where this dog lives, and when the dog snarls at the children, you can hear the parents get after the children instead of the dog.

What is wrong with this world when people are so lacking in concern for the safety of children?

Ugh I know... Lately I´ve become terrified of dogs too even the dogs I somewhat know... There are so many more aggressive dogs now than before because the owners just don´t care about others... There is a similar problem at my cousin´s "street".. They sort of live in the countryroad with not too many ppl around and there is this dog that attacks everyone... The "only" problem is that the owner is a rocker (is that the same term in English..?) so they are afraid to do something about it...

Thats not good at all..It really does suck when smt has to happned for smt to be done.

I have just learned a sad story of a dog who was owned by my old landlady. Kenji always stayed on his own property when they let him out. He was harmless and a beautiful snow white husky type breed. Next door live 2 pit bulls. A few weeks ago they got loose and killed Kinji, on his own property. I was so sad to hear this news, he was a beautiful creature. What is even more frightening, Kenji had a 2 year old human brother. I am so thankful that little Taylor wasn't out with the dog.
The owner of the pitbulls has been fined $5000 but is going to court to fight it because he doesn't think that he should have to pay. Pitbulls are illegal in Ontario, you can't breed them or bring puppies into the province. I hate pitbulls.

OMG what a terrible story. I understand you are sad for the dog but at the same time that the little boy wasn´t harmed... Such owners should go to jail immediately!!! Makes me so angry

Sorry Rhonda. I am sure that some pitbulls can be sweet. But time after time these creatures have caused so much trouble that the Ontario government has banned them here. Everytime we heard about a dog attack, whether on another pet or a child, it was always a pitbull. So the province decided that enough was enough.

My co-worker also had two pitbulls who were really nice. Her boyfriend wanted to make them mean at one point but she didn't let him. They are so cute.

That's a shame!! Our neighbor has an agressive dog too. He beats the crap out of their other dogs that are 10 times as big as that little runt, lol.

I'm with Rhonda. I too have a pitbull, she's the sweetest and she protects her family (us). No dogs are born vicious, it's the owners who train them to be that way for betting on dog fights, hence the pitbulls' ears and tails are always cut off at birth. It doesn't have to be pitbulls, it could be any other dogs. Unfortunately pitbulls are the mass chosen ones. It makes me so sad every time I hear stories about them.

My pitbull along with my German Shepherd slept next to my daughters when they were babies on both sides...as if they were protecting them...which they were. Once I had a telephone man came to wire my phone line, he passed my daughter's room and stopped to greet them. My dogs got up immediately and came to the doorway, like they were preventing him to enter the room.

By the way, both of my dogs were abandoned on the streets before I adopted them. If you take good care of your dogs, your dogs will take good care of you with unconditional love.

Certainly there are "bad seeds" when it comes to animals, just as with humans.

But most often it is the human owner (past or current) that is to blame.

Pitbulls have gotten a very bad rap because people breed them and train them to be aggressive.

Years ago, it was dobermans and shepards and then rottweilers for a while.

Ironically, the dog breed with the most "natural" aggression isnt a popular breed and one most people havent even heard of...the Akita.

That doesn't mean they can't be trained to be good dogs, but they can be stubborn and snappy.

Someone mentioned a Cocker Spaniel attack.
Cockers are very nervous dogs and should be supervised at all times around children, despite their smaller size.

Shitzus are also very high strung and generally don't make good pets for children.

There are always exceptions to the rule so generalizations are hard to make.

You'll always hear that so and so's Akita or Shitzu made a wonderful pet etc. etc.
But there are some dogs that make better pets for children than others, perhaps simply because they are "easier" to train or have more patience as a breed.

You might be surprised to find out that Pit Bulls are actually, if whelped by a good mother and trained and treated right by humans, are in the top 10 dog breeds that are good with children.

That is true, it's all in how you raise the dogs.
