My Grandma Empty
PostSubject: My Grandma   My Grandma EmptyMon Nov 09, 2015 12:22 pm

At the end of the summer my grandma was in a minor car accident. She was not hurt, but when she was having tests done at the hospital after the car accident it was discovered that she has pancreatic cancer. She was scheduled to have a big surgery this week, but she in the past few days she has had different tests done to see if the surgery would even be safe for her and to see if the cancer has started to spread. Right now I don't even know if she is still going to have the surgery because as of now we don't know what the results of the tests she's had in the last week are.

I am more upset about this because the cancer was discovered weeks ago and it seems like it has taken way too long for the doctors she is seeing to schedule her treatment and move forward with it. I just spent yesterday afternoon with my grandma and she seemed completely fine, she was her regular self so it is hard to believe sometimes that she is even sick, but I know that she is very sick.

If you could say a prayer for my grandma, it would be very much appreciated. She said yesterday that she is trusting God and prayer to help her through this, and I know I should try to do the same even though it will not be easy for me right now.

Thank you all for praying for my grandma. It means a lot to me. We found out that she will not be having the surgery because the cancer she has, has spread too far and the surgery would not really help her. As of right now I'm not sure if she is going to receive chemo either, because from what we have learned it would not do very much for her, and her quality of life would go down because the treatments would make her so sick.

I don't think it has quite hit me yet on how sick my grandma is, but I know that eventually it will. I am worried about her and my grandma, but I know that she will make the most of her time left, and I want to try and spend as much time as possible with her.

My Grandma started chemo in mid-December, about a week and a half before Christmas. So far she has had two treatments, and next week she will start her third. Sometimes it is still hard to believe that she is sick because when I have seen her recently, she has mostly been feeling well, and she just has always been so strong. I am hoping that this next round of chemo will not make her too sick so she can continue to be able to do the things she enjoys.

So sorry she is so sick . I know how hard it is to see someone you love dearly going through so much. My brother is now in remission after a year and a half of fighting Leukemia. Its been a journey we really didn't know if we would win, but doctors can do a lot now. Hang tough and enjoy every moment with her. Everyone involved is touched when this happens. I will kept her in my prayers.

My Grandma has been doing okay in the past few weeks, she is not feeling great after receiving her treatments and I think the biggest issue coming from that is that she has not been eating much. My parents and my aunts have been trying different things so she will eat or at least get some nutrition but my Grandma either doesn't like it or what they try to do for her doesn't work.

But despite all of that, she is still as strong-willed as she always has been and likes to be able to do her favorite things as often as she can.

Recently our family found out that the treatments my grandma has been receiving have stopped helping her and that the cancer is starting to spread. For a while the chemo was keeping the cancer stable, but it has stopped working. She is going to try a different chemo and see if that helps, or at least prolongs her life a bit more. Today my dad had to go down to my grandparent's house to check on my grandma (his mom) because she isn't eating or drinking at all since her last treatment. My grandma has always been very stubborn- for a time she was insisting that the anti-nausea medicines were making her feel worse instead of helping her, and despite that they would help a lot, she didn't want to take them.

When my grandma was first diagnosed with cancer at the end of last summer, I knew that the outcome might not be good because anyone I have known or known of who had this same type of cancer, did not survive it. But deep down I hoped my grandma would be different, that the treatments would work and that she would survive. It is very sad to think that she is getting even sicker.

Yesterday morning my Grandma passed away. I am heartbroken. For a while it seemed like she was doing alright, and within the past ten days her health declined very quickly, and Sunday she passed. It still does not seem real, and it seems hard to believe that things can continue going on in the world when something so sad has happened.

On Friday night I drove into the city with my dad to visit my Grandma at the hospital, and Saturday I visited her in hospice, and I'm so glad that I did. It was so difficult to see her there, but I'm glad I was able to visit her both of those times. I did not say goodbye to her until after she had passed, because the word goodbye is just too final for me and I wasn't ready to say it yet. My aunt, uncle, and cousins from out of state have been here since the end of last week, and it has been strange having them here for so many days at a time. It is nice being able to see them and spend time with them but I wish it was for a better reason.

Kristina , I am so sorry to hear of you Grandma's illness and death. My own Grandma passed away on June 28, 1993, due to a car accident. I don't believe there is an easy way to loose a grandparent. They are special and hold a truly honorable spot in our lives.
Remember her before she was sick and all the lessons you have learned from her . She would only want you to remember her with laughter. Lots of love from the LH forum!

Thank you all for keeping my Grandma in your thoughts the past few days, and for praying for her over the past months. It means a lot to me.

Thursday was the services for my grandma, and it was difficult because I'd never been to a funeral home for a wake and I haven't been to a funeral in a long time. The funny thing about it though was, we didn't leave the cemetery to head to lunch until well after 1:00, and I could just imagine my Grandma saying "Hurry up, it's time to eat" because that's exactly what she would have done. After lunch at the restaurant, I went to Barnes & Noble since it was close by and books are an excellent form of therapy. It was nice seeing cousins on Thursday but I wish it had been for a better reason.

Tomorrow will be my first day back to work (I took this past week off) and quite honestly I am dreading it more than I used to dread going back to school after a vacation, but I know it is something I need to do. I am trying to remember that my Grandma would want all of us to be happy, she would not want us to be sad because of her.
