We talked about this a year or two ago, and now it's only two months away.  The Great American Eclipse happens on August 21st!  The areas that will see a total eclipse are in that swath that runs straight across the middle of the country.  Who's gonna see it??

ShyGirl

I say I might be able to see it, and even though it will be in the summertime, with my luck, we'll have an overcast sky! I miss ALL the neat full moons, eclipses, etc.... Yikes

Even if it's overcast, the darkness should still be pretty dramatic.  Hoping for clear skies for you!

It looks like I have to wait until 2024 before I see one over here!

I would definitely make the drive, Rhonda!  But if you can't, you'll have another chance on April 8th, 2024.  This is the one I'm pinning my hopes on.  I live in the 90% totality zone, but a four-hour drive will get me to totality.  I hope I'm not jinxing myself.  There's an old Jewish saying:  If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.  Whistle

You're just a hop, skip and a jump from totality, right, Matthew?

I might actually get to see this! I will be in South Dakota on the 21st, so I will basically be in the 90% range!

Melissa, I got some from Amazon several weeks ago. Not sure you'd get them in time if you order them now, though.

Rob, there was a warning from NASA about the glasses Amazon was selling.  You might check to make sure what you have will be safe to use.....
And, I've been wondering if the dark glasses you get after an eye appointment when your eyes get dilated would work in the same manner?

Thanks for that, Rhonda. The ones I have are made by a company called Soluna. While it's not named in the first link you posted, it's listed in the second as a reputable vendor.

I don't think the dark glasses you mentioned would work. The ones I got are so heavily tinted that you literally can't see anything except the sun.

Hey, Rhonda, have you decided whether you're going to drive to an area of totality?

scratchead I'm not sure if I'll drive anywhere....I'm so close to totality, I'm not sure the trip would make much difference....I still have a few more days to decide.....

Neat viewer!

I've never seen a total eclipse in the flesh, but from the videos I've seen, the difference between near-totality and totality is pretty dramatic. But there's always 2024. It's amazing that one state is going to see two totalities in the space of seven years!

Click the link to put your zip code in and find out the time and amount of eclipse you will be seeing. Mine shows partial, but I have a friend that shows total...
Might have to make a trip up to visit her....
