Introducing the Little House Role Playing Games Section
What is a role playing game you may ask? You don't know it, but you already know how to play a role playing game. Chances are you've played one before. In some neighborhoods, it might have been "playing army" or "trip to Mars", but more often than not it was "Cowboys and Indians".
"Let's Pretend" games are the primitive cousins of role playing games. You pick out some sort of adventure situation, choose what kind of person you are within that background, then play out the situation you've set up to see what happens to you. In a "Let's Pretend" game, you are never yourself; you are your favorite character. Role playing, in essence, is putting yourself in your character’s place, and reacting to situations the way you think that person would react.
Sometimes role playing is compared to theater, but it's not like you'd see in a regular play on a stage. There, your role has been predefined, and your actions predetermined by a script. Your story is already written, and you tell it with costumes, props, and scenery as much as with your words.
Our sort of role playing is more like improvisational street theater. There's no script and no one to tell you exactly what to do. YOU start out with a basic idea of who you are and how you got here. Then, you meet situations as they arrive, making it up as you go. You create the setting in the mind's eye of your audience with your words and descriptions in your story.
So, just as in any game, there are some rules. Follow these rules below:
1. If you are reading this, it means you are interested in RPG (Role Playing Game).
2. In order to participate in an RPG, you must first own a character. You can set up your character sheet by going to your Profile and filling in the sheet, telling a little bit about yourself, posting a picture of your character, etc. Once you have done that, you will notice that the name of your character appears under your Avatar. See the RPG Character Sheet thread in the Announcement section to read more about this.
3. Start creating your story! Create a thread with the title of your story. Remember, you are your character so you are telling the story in a first person view. Other
characters may join your story and say how they feel or react in the story you have created. Other characters that join in
can’t control your character because she/he will be writing in first person view. See example:
Character: Nells
It’s raining hard tonight. I sit here trying to read a newspaper as my daughter Nellie is playing the piano, or at least trying to. I start to get a headache and wonder when she will stop playing. As I get up to see what I can take for this headache I hear knocking at the door.**Here any character can join in… for example say Laura wanted to join in. Her post would be:
Character: Laura
I knock hard on Mr. Oleson’s door. The rain is coming down hard and I am drenched. I can’t believe what has happened to me tonight. Three men came to the blind school and they now might hurt Mary if I don’t get a doctor.
“Oh, I hope they open the door soon”.**Notice how the Laura character did not control Nell’s actions. The character Nell now sees in his story that Laura is knocking on his door so he can continue w/ the story.
4. Only people with characters are allowed to participate in the role playing game. If you want to participate, create a character and join in.
5. You can have as many role playing game stories as you like. Please use one thread for each story and also, please finish a game before posting another one.
6. Rule number 6? Have fun!
