Seasonal foods Empty
PostSubject: Seasonal foods   Seasonal foods EmptyTue Oct 30, 2007 7:38 pm

Come Fall, there are certain foods that I always crave. I love winter squash of any kind, and pumpkin treats.. . . pumpkin cookies, pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin muffins.......and when Fall comes, I always crave Gingersnap cookies. Homemade, of course. The ones in the store are always hard as rocks, and I don't like crunchy or hard cookies. I love soft cookies! I have a recipe for Gingersnaps that is SOOOO good. They're easy to make - and it's a good thing, because they're gone almost as soon as they've been made!

Are there any "seasonal" foods that you love?

I love winter squash too!! Pumpkin pies and cookies. I never had pumpkin pancakes, but I'm sure it tastes delicious!! I cook chicken soups and chicken stews a lot of times in Fall, guess my mom always made them while growing up, so I just followed her tradition. Oh I also love the stuffings.

Good topic Savannah.

I was making some Gingersnaps yesterday, and thought I'd post the recipe here. It's an old recipe, but very, very good!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gingersnaps
2 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger
3/4 C. shortening
1 C. brown sugar
1 egg
4 T. molasses
Cream shortening, brown sugar, egg and molasses. Add flour, salt, soda, cloves, cinnamon and ginger. Mix well. Shape into balls about the size of a walnut. Roll in white sugar. Place on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 12 minutes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

They're so good! It's funny - when I was little, and my Mom was teaching me how to make these, I asked her how big to make the balls of dough. She'd always say "Oh, about the size of a walnut.". It drove me crazy! I wanted an exact SIZE - like in inches! LOL! So, one day, I decided to check the cookbook for the size . . . . . and doggonit! That stupid cookbook said "Shape into balls the size of walnuts". :Hahaha:

And what really makes it hard is if you have never seen a walnut and don't know its size!!! :haha:

Thanks for the recipe Savannah......IF I can find some spare time, I might whip up a batch......:unsure:

Since your Everyday Cookies were so good, I'll have to try your gingersnaps. I need to get some molasses though. I need molasses for an applebutter roll cake I've been wanting to try.

I love pumpkin things. I look forward to making pumpkin and cranberry baked goods in the fall. I need to find my pumpkin muffin recipe that has apples, raisin, and walnuts in them. They are so good.

Now that the weather is getting cooler, I like to make things like soup, or stew, or chili.

I am really looking forward to sweet potato pie on Thanksgiving.
