22nd Anniversary of the Challenger Tragedy Challenger2

Today, Monday, January 28, 2008 is the 22nd anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger tragedy. Just over a minute after take-off, the U.S. Space Shuttle Challenger exploded; all seven crew members (including one teacher) died in the disaster.

==============

*I thought there was already a post about this but I couldn't find it... :think:
Anyway, do you remember this event? What were you doing at the time?

I actually watched this in class and at the time I was into space very much and being an astronaut appealed to me. My cousins and I had this astronaut pack w/ walkie talkies that we would use often to play and I had a space shuttle model in my room... so watching this event was pretty tough.
May all the wonderful crew rest in peace. Blue

I can't believe it's been so long. I think most kids go through a phase where space travel and astronauts are of huge interest. I know I did, and so did my friends. There's just something amazing about it! I was in complete shock when The Challenger blew up. It was heartbreaking. No

In Arlington National Cemetery, there's a beautiful memorial to the crew. Here's a link to the site, which also includes President Reagan's speech from the Oval Office, the day of the tragedy. Very moving:

Wow, has it really been that long?!?! I was sitting in my Sophomore history class when it happened. I'll never forget it, or that feeling. We all had tv's in our rooms to watch the launch and I remember them cutting to the families as they were trying to figure out what had just happened, in total shock and disbelief that it had just exploded. All I could think about was the teacher, Christine McCaullugh(SP?). Now I think more about my teacher and how he handled it, dealing with our class when he was in shock himself. You don't think about that as a kid, but now, looking back I can only imagine how very difficult that must have been for him, and for all the teachers dealing with their classes that day. That was a huge black mark for NASA too, later on, as we all discovered the O-Rings and that they ignored or belittled the problem. That was a tragedy that didn't need to be, which always makes it harder to deal with.

I watched it on TV after school one day, so I guess it has been a while. I remember watching the screen showing the explosion over and over again. Reminds me of the days following Princess Diana's death or September 11th. Too much news coverage.

What a heartbreaking day that was. I'll never forget it.

Here's something kind of eerie. When we first landed on the moon in 1969, President Nixon had a memorial speech prepared just in case Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin weren't able to return. Luckily he never had to deliver it. Here it is.

I remember this too. I was a freshman in High School and we were watching it in our Science class. My teacher cried, and our principal came over the loud speaker to tell the whole school what had happend. Our flag was lowered, and the whole day was just so sad. All the school tragedies, 911, Princess Di left you with the same feelings. Its always felt by the whole nation. Hope 2008 will be full of smiles.

I was in high school at the time of the explosion. I remember seeing it on tv and watching it in disbelief. I couldn't help but hope that somehow, by some miracle, they would find them alive. Though I knew in my heart that would never happen.

My thoughts too, were with Christa McCullough family. Thinking about how excited she was and how heartbreaking it was that she never got to realize her dream. It was so tragic and sad for all of the families involved.

I was home from school that day, I watched it on TV in my house with my Mom. I remember seeing it exploded right in front of my TV screen, I remember hearing the announcer kept saying that it was still possible that they had survived, that gave me such a hope every time I heard him said that, but after a few minutes, I remember all our hopes became dim and it felt like the whole nation was silent. Very sad!! No

Wow. 22 years and I feel like I'm right back there in my high school classroom. Blue

The footage of the semi-finalist teacher watching really got me. I can't even imagine what he must have been feeling in that moment.

I'm a little too young to remember it, but it is really sad to think about what their poor families went through. Like Gin said, all these sort of tragedies leave you with the same feeling. I can't believe so much time has gone by!
