The things you hear at the store.....

I was at the store yesterday, and I saw this cute little boy, who couldn't have been more than four years old. He was looking at some chips, and his Dad said "C'mon buddy, time to go". The little boy looked at his Dad, then back at the chips, and didn't move. His Dad called him again. When the little boy still didn't move, the Dad gently took his arm, and guided him toward the cart. The little boy planted his feet in place, glared at his Dad, and told him "Get your hands off me right now, Dad!" I was so blown away! First, because the little boy spoke so disrespectfully - but also, because his Dad laughed and said "Okay, buddy". :faint2:

Now, I'm not saying that the Dad should half-kill the child . . . . . But even in public, it's possible to quietly let that child know that that kind of disrespect is not going to be tolerated.

Some of the things you see little kids do amaze me but it is even more amazing how some parents don't dicipline them.

I think part of the problem is that kids learn very early in age that "hitting" is something the parent can go to jail for.

I believe parents can still hit a child... BUT if they do it the right way... there is a right and wrong way to do so. Some kids DON'T require hitting... but others do and if they do, it doesn't mean they are bad kids... it's just they need tougher discipline... depending on the wrong thing they did.
Some kids know how to lie and be such brats that they feel they can get their parents in trouble if they lay a hand on them. I have a friend who's daughter tells her that if her mother hits her w/ a belt or anything... that she will call the police right away. She's only 10 years old!

I think that kid in the supermarket might be one of those kids... who knows about parents getting in trouble for hitting kids... the way his attitude was... he was so sure of himself and what he said... and the dad just laughed??? goodness gracious... I hope he realizes that is nothing compared to how the kid may act as he grows older....

So True Back Then Parent's give the Children a Whipin if they misbehaved now the Children Hit there Parents I have seen this my Cousin's Children do it to her she has had such a Tough time already her Husband was always Drinking and now he left her in mexico just drop her off at her parents and told her he was gonna pick her up again but never did then came in the middel of the night and stohl her money and had other woman and stuff finally he ended Up in a Rehab Center once he got out he wanted her back but she said no for once and for all she had taken him back for 3 Times already

Kids nowadays have so much disrespect for their parents, teachers, police, elderlies. They're no parental guidelines at home, parents using profanity in front of their kids which I have heard many times in the stores and on the streets. Unfortunately, it will pass down from generation to generation. It's a real shame!!!

That ALWAYS shocks me, when an adult uses foul language in front of children. I know that they hear it in music and movies (which shouldn't be!) but it isn't the same as having an adult that they know and (should) respect using that kind of language in front of them. It sets a very poor example.

I hate to hear parents screaming and shouting at their children. (Especially now) A lot of times, what has happened is that the parents have been annoyed by the child's behavior throughout the day, but didn't address the problem before. So things build up and build up, and the parent explodes instead of taking care of things the proper way. Loses complete control of their temper, screaming and shouting things that shouldn't be said.....
But there is so much disrespect now. In all ages. I've heard couples speak in a shockingly rude and unkind manner to one another, and wonder how they think they can build a relationship treating one another that way. So many people seem to have the mentality that "The most important person in the whole wide world is ME", and treat others with a disregard that is terribly sad. They miss out on so much.

I think that parents are loosing authority in front of children. You don't need to shout at your children in public, but some kind of punishement is due if they don't behave. I have the whole impression of children ruling in home inestead of their parents. A good discipline prevents to have to use violence in your daughters and son, but this discipline MUST exist and couldn't be negociated. Just a tought... :think:

I've never had this problem. My children are older now, but they know better than to pull a fit in a store, cuz they learned it when they were younger.
There's too many children growing up to get in trouble, and I think a lot of it has to do with parents being complacent, or letting them get by with it just so they're not labeled bad parents.
I'll take that chance before I see my kid grow up and end up in jail.

And a bunch of these parents think all of that behavior is "cute" when the kids are younger but then are at their wits end when the kids are older & act that way. Maybe if they would have curbed it early, it wouldn't have happened.

Several years back we were in HEB and there was a child about 3 in a basket saying the "F" word over and over. The parents did nothing at all about it and I wanted to slap the parents. Of course, the child probably learned it from them!

Of course they did. I've said a lot of bad things that ended up coming out of my kid's mouth, and I told them not to say those words, and apologized for saying them in front of them, but I didn't give them a license to say them again.

I told this fine young gentleman that he was supposed to respect his elders, and if he talked to me like that again, I'd take his little head and shove it in a can of spaghettios.

His mother was there the whole time and didn't say a word. I could tell she wished she could say that, but was afraid to. I'll be danged if I'll be afraid of one of my own children.

Oh, don't even get me started on parents these days. It's unreal...people are just clueless and I truly fear for the next generation. I agree with everything you've all said. Parents are trying to be 'friends' with their kids, rather than parents. And also, with the divorce rate rising, more parents are over-indulging their kids with 'stuff', and overcompensating for their absence by 'looking the other way', when they need to discipline. They don't want to be the 'bad parent'. And let's face it...those of us who have kids know that it's easier to look the other way. But who ever said parenting was easy? I remember when my son was 2 1/2 (my boys were at their absolute worst at that age), and having a cart-load of groceries, and threatening to leave the store if he didn't quit with his tantrum throwing because he wanted something. We ended up leaving, and it wasn't exactly 'fun'. But as he got older, he knew when I threatened something, I followed through with it...I don't make empty threats, and I believe that's the problem with parents now. They make threats, they don't follow through, and there's absolutely no consistency.

And THEN, the poor kindergarten teachers are the ones stuck with the little monsters once they hit school age!

That's a big part of the problem. Sometimes kids grow up without any kind of discipline or guidelines. Or the role models that they do have are inadequate. As with the example you gave of parents swearing in front of their kids. Sometimes the real problem is that parents enable their kids to act this way.
