And Carol! They have tamarinds! So maybe I'll try that, too.

Yeah? That's neat! Thumbsup
Here is a recipe for the Tamarind drink:

Ingredients
1/2 lb dried tamarind (remove shell)
3 cups water
1 cup sugar (or to taste)

Directions
1 Put the tamarind and water in a large bowl.

2 Let soak for an hour or so.

3 Then remove seeds with your hands.

4 Try to mash up the tamarind, for this will make it easier to remove the seeds and give the water a more pronounced flavor.

5 Pour water through a strainer.

6 Add sugar.

7 Refridgerate until well chilled. Serve and enjoy!

8 Serve chilled with lots of ice.

THis is really great! I've already tasted it, since I can get Tamarind paste at Asiatic stores. This drink is the better you can have in hot days.

Vanesa. Applause

We had persimmon trees in California. My daddy couldn't WAIT for them to get ripe so he could suck the sweet fruit out of it.......

Savannah, get some and make persimmon bread. Use a banana nut bread recipe and substitute the persimmon for it......or google a recipe online.....it is aMAZing........ grinsmiley

:faint2: Rhonda........You weren't just kidding!! I made persimmon muffins, using a banana muffin recipe, and substituted the persimmons in it.........Oh MY WORD!! They're incredibly delicious!

Nobody in my family will eat muffins (or banana bread!) if it has nuts in it. Huh? But it was absolutely WONDERFUL, even without nuts!

Sounds like my family......I love nuts in cakes, cookies and muffins...not them, they will either pick them apart, or ignore them completely!!! Whistle

First time I tried it? Hum. Don't remember exactly when, but I think it was five or six years ago...

Vanesa.

P.S: I also likes nuts and such only in cakes or pies...I don't bear them alone.

Lois' Persimmon Bread

3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup peeled and mashed persimmons
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/2 cup raisins

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Grease the bottom of a 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together sugar, eggs and vegetable oil.
  3. Stir together persimmon pulp and baking soda in a small bowl. Add to sugar mixture; mix well.
  4. In another bowl, combine flour, cinnamon and salt. Add pecans and raisins. Fold into persimmon/egg mixture. Pour into prepared pan.
  5. Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.

Makes one (9 x 5 x 3-inch) loaf; or 12 servings.

Where could you get persimmons this time of year? In the grocery store? I don't think I've ever seen them. The recipe sounds delicious and I'd love to try it...

If we have them here in my little town, you probably can find them in the produce section in your grocery store. grinsmiley

Yes, that's where they are here, anyway. There's a small section of our fresh fruits department, that has pineapple, star fruit, persimmons, kiwi.......anything that doesn't grow around here. But yeah......it's in with the fresh fruit.

Okay........Now I see it.

I haven't seen that in any of the stores around here. But, I don't go down that aisle very often, anyway. I *try* to drink water or milk rather than anything carbonated. But once in a while I like something fizzy. I'd probably give that a try. Thumbsup

It looks like it would be good over ice on a hot day. I haven't seen it in the stores yet.

Spring is finally here, the lovely pink blooms on the "spray" tree outside my window are gone leaving a beautiful willow.

Oh my goodness, I'm going to have to show this to my son! He LOVES pomegranates! This would be the 'non-messy' version! Wink

I love Persimmon pudding, but you can't get persimmons this time of year here. Normally, I just wait 'til after the first frost and go pick 'em up off the ground myself.

Interesting old wive's tale; If you pop open a persimmon seed and find a spoon, it'll be a mild winter. If you find the shape of a fork, you'll have a hard winter.
