“Child Of Pain”


When it is found out that a young boy, Graham, is being beaten by his alcoholic father, John, Caroline takes care of the boy while Charles stays with John to try to get him to stay sober.















A great episode that shows how dangerous the affects of alcohol can be. This man did love his kid but he was to addicted to alcohol, it was stronger than him so when he was under the influence he would go so far as to beat up his kid.
I’m glad Ms. Beadle took Graham to Doc Baker and glad the town held a meeting to help this family. Both Caroline and Charles and the girls did their part in working w/ the boy and his father. Great ending.

Sad Episode that Father Sure got on my Nerves

u are very right! it was sooo sad about him getting abused!

This is an excellent episode, so sad too that things like this really happen in society. There are a lot of people out there who need help of some sort and never receive it.

.Too true... Some people needs help and anyone notices they are suffering or in trouble. In this case, Graham and his father needed help. Of course, Charles was there to offer this help...Go on "Super-Pa of the Prairie"!!! :woohooo: :tapdance:

Yes indeed, while I feel more for the boy I was a bit against Charles attitude at first though, at first he really didn't care much about what happened with the father. What some fail to see is if you only help the boy and forget the father you will not really solve the problem even if you take that child away. If you dont also help the one doing the abuse in this kind of case you may save that child that you took away but the abuser would just go on and do the same thing to somebody else. I believe in help for both parties, charles did the right thing in the end by helping the father to overcome his problem. If you also help the one doing the abuse to get better you save a whole long list of other people that would probably suffer the same fate as that boy in this episode.

In a case like this too we have to understand that alcoholism is a disease, it is the alcohol doing the talking and the abuse in these types of cases. When you help the person overcome there alcoholism you have a whole other person as seen as example in this episode. Once the father overcame his problem we could see that he actually was a very loving and kind man.

I didn't like certain parts of this episode, but I was glad to see that Charles was the one who helped Graham's father.

what struck me with this episode was the communities willingness to step in....would we do that nowadays or are we so busy we no longer are aware whats going on in our local area....oh to go back to the days where the only help you had was your neighbours ...
anyway i did love how Ma had the foresight to say so well how fixing the family as a whole would be the best result...

this was a sad episode. I hated to see Graham be abused by his father, and I was happy when Charles stepped in to help Graham's father overcome his alcohol addiction so Graham wouldn't be abused again. I would have liked to see a follow up episode after this one to find out what happened to Graham in the future!

I too would have liked to see a follow-up episode in a later season.

Charles's view on just helping Graham was shocking. Normally he's for helping an entire family and not just one person.

Go Caroline for having the guts to stand up to Mr. Kennedy. I would have liked to see Mr. Kennedy in more seasons. Yes, he was a pain, but it was always great to see people rally on the good side and stand up to Mr. Kennedy. (Doesn't he later become Larabee?)

Graham is cute. :b His dad looks a lot like my friend's husband...


No matter how many times I watch this episode when Graham's father goes into the barn at the end of the episode I keep waiting for him to take on last sip!

Yes....What a pity that we only sees some characters once in the whole show. If they are loveable characters one wants to have them in more episodes to come...

I think that Mr. Kennedy is a lot like Larabee. They have the same personnality or almost the same, for I think that Mr. Kennedy is softer than Mr. Larabee. Besides, his children are lovely. I wish I could see Christy and Sandy in more than an epie.

I love this episode. However, I would still be concerned if after only one week "alcohol-free," Graham's father would really not go back to the bottle. I think it would have beeen nice to have a tag scene that took place 1-2 months later to show that the dad was still staying sober. I also would have liked to have a tag scene where he would have stood up in church and thanked them for butting into his and Graham's life, etc. This could also have taken place some time after his reunion with Graham, and that would have helped us to see that he was indeed staying sober. And it would have been sort of a nice way to reconcile him to Revd. Alden, too, since he seemed quite bitter against him when Revd. Alden came out to the farm.

But the acting by the dad was really good, in my opinion. The bat thing was gross.....what is it with the first season? First it's a rabid raccoon, then we have rats all over the corn meal, and now we have a creepy bat attacking a man in a dream or hallucination!

Graham is cute as a button!

I also think Ms. Beadle was terrific in recognizing the signs of abuse and not just ignoring it. And I also love how the town met to figure out how to handle the situation.

Awesome episode...Yes. I think that we could have seen Graham and his father after a while. I suppose the kind of end of the episode give us the key about how happened later, I mean that Graham was never beated up by her father, and that her father remained sober. But I'm somewhat disappointed about the writers, for when they told us a story of a new nieghbor in Walnut Grove, they hurries to put them out of the show as soon as the story ends...Grrrr. I'm sure wants to know more about Anna, Olga, Tinker Jones, the Kennedies and other really good characters of the show...

It would have been nice to have more of these guest stars as recurring characters, but I know the real-life actors have to move on to other opportunities, so maybe it just did not usually work out, especially if they tried to have whole families recurring, or both a parent and a child.

I do like this episode-even though it is rather sad...

Oh and the title should be "Child Of Pain."

A great episode. It's wonderful that Mrs. Beadle recignized the sighns of abuse. The town meeting was a great idea. I think Harriet said somthing like "He's a monster." about Grahm's dad. It show's people's mentality about abusers. We saw that Grahm's dad had a problem that needed to be helped. This is how things should be looked at when abuse is reported.
The Social Work student will now stop her lecture.
