Paula Abdul replacement

They've announced that Ellen DeGeneres is taking Paula's place as a judge on American Idol. Hmm... not sure what qualifies Ellen to judge singing.

You have GOT to be kidding me?! :faint2: I love Ellen, but not for a SINGING show! I have to think she's going to turn this show into a mockery. We already had too much focus on the judges last season (took forever to get through a critique, for example), and now with the 'comedy act', it's going to take even longer. I would have respected them more if they'd put someone in there like Randy and Simon, a 'producer' or someone who knows what to look for. Or at least a 'performer', like Paula.

I heard about this too. If I ever watched AI, I would stop. Ellen is funny, but she has no place there.

The problem I have is this: There shouldn't be a 4th judge. Three is enough. It takes too long to get through 3 comments after each performance, let alone four. The show went overtime last season a couple of times because of this. They don't need 4 judges.

I agree with this. If I were the producers, I'd just keep Randy, Kara and Simon. I don't see where having a fourth judge adds anything to the show

I'm a fan of Ellen, she's very funny and her show is amusing, but I just don't think she fits the part of an American Idol judge!

For real. What was ever wrong with just 3 judges?! Ugh. I guess a LOT of people don't like Kara though, and now they're not just going to 'get rid' of her, so I guess they're feeling like they need to get someone likeable in there? I don't know.

who knows? maybe Ellen will surprise us all with her music knowledge

I wish they would go back to the original order: Randy, Paula & Simon. That formula worked for many seasons. I don't like Kara at all & I agree its a mistake to bring Ellen in. Truthfully, I stopped watching a couple years ago after it went from unknowns to somewhat knowns. I think that changed the show from what it started out being. I don't know why they had to do that; look at the successes of Kelly Clarkson & Carrie Underwood. I think I'm finally done with it!

I completely thought that you were making that up.

I don't follow AI closely, but it seems like a fourth judge is not only unnecessary, but also a little redundant. By the time the fourth judge gets to their remarks, fans are going to be yawning or changing the channel. "Heard it. Move on already."

I don't get it either. Like Misti said, the three judge format worked for many seasons. Last season was the first time they added a fourth, and there were nights when it really caused a logjam. One night, in order to speed things up, they said that only two judges could comment on the first singer, the other two on the second, etc.

So now that Paula's leaving and they have a chance to discreetly go back to the original format, they go and add somebody else.
