EasyT, I think one person answered as I would have so there is no point in repeating.
But one comment stuck in my craw. I found the fellow that denigrated people of faith very distasteful.
I have my personal views about the subject that may conflict with others but I'm no longer 'in your face' about it. Excuse my language but the person that insulted faith is an ass.

I think that the genius of the show is that it tackles serious themes and yet does it in a way that younger children will not be exposed to more than they can handle. This way, the show is able to hold the attention of both chiildren and adults. At least this is the way I feel. For example, in CHILD IN PAIN, the scene fades to black as the dad is holding the belt. Some episodes may require a parent to discuss them with the children, but I honestly would not have a problem letting any age child watch this show, unless I knew of underlying circumstances in that child's life which may make a particular episode one that he/she should not watch at too young of an age. I don't think really young children would even "get" what goes on in SYLVIA.

That's my opinion.

This is an interesting topic. It seems to me the TV show ratings are inconsistent. Some networks seem to rate shows episode by episode, while others seem to apply the same rating to all episodes of a show. The latter approach seems to be more common for reruns. It has occurred to me that some episodes of LHotP should probably have a PG rating, probably with a V subrating, but the vast majority of the episodes should be G. Examples of LHotP episodes that could be rated PG would by Sylvia, May We Make Them Proud, Darkness Is My Friend, and Home Again. I distinctly remember Sylvia containing a parental advisory when it first aired on NBC.

Now that I think more about it, maybe I would not let any age child watch an episode like SYLVIA....I really don't know. I guess I would have to deal with it at the time, but I do think a PG rating for an episode like that is certainly appropriate. In any case, I felt like the person asking the question onthe link was making it seem like the series is a veritable showcase for every kind of vice. It is not the vice that is the problem. I think it is the way it is handled.

So, if there had to be one rating for the whole series, perhaps PG is more appropriate. But for the majority of episodes, I still think a G rating is appropriate. Back in the day when LHOTP aired, we did not have ratings for TV shows, so it would not have mattered anyway.

TV shows weren't originally rated, and even the DVDs on Amazon don't have a rating. I remember that back in 2008, the LHOP DVDs were given a banned rating in Finland because NBC's Universal Pictures refused to pay a huge fee to have them reviewed, but I didn't know they were rated in other locations.

In my response to this person's post, I mentioned that the G rating seems consistent when you consider that Disney films like Mulan carry the same rating, and that film is about a girl joining the Chinese army when they were under seige by Atila the Hun. It has some violent scenes in it. Disney classics like Cinderella and Snow White also display horrendous behavior--a stepmother who hates her daughter and makes her slave and locks her in her room, an evil queen who poisons a girl.

On a comparative scale, yes, I think a G rating is probably sufficient....but still not so sure about an episode like SYLVIA. I have not seen that one for a very long time, so I would have to re-evaluate it to see if I think it is too heavy for a younger child to watch. As I mentioned, I'm not sure that a younger child would even know what it is really all about. Then again, I'm one of those kids who grew up with my mom's soap operas on seemingly all afternoon so maybe I was exposed to all these things ever since I remember and maybe that is why it does not seem like that big of a deal to me. Also, I don't have any children of my own and maybe I would feel differently if I did.
