Shadow (8 week old lab) is into biting! I have scars from his bites from his little razor sharp teeth. I'm going to buy some bitter apple spray to put on my ankles so he won't bite me lol

He is so mouthy! He has to have something on his mouth all day long! lol

Did you guys deal with puppy biting? If so, how did you handle it?

You don't let them, I do know that. It's perfectly natural that they want to, but they have to learn early that it's not acceptable. Sounds mean, but you need to grab the mouth/jaw as soon as they start to do it, and say 'no' firmly at the same time. Then give them the toy that IS acceptable to chew. I was in the pet supply store the other day, and couldn't get over how many 'cooling' dog teethers there are now! I'm sure that would feel good to him!

Good luck Carol....I remember those biting days well, and they're not fun! Yikes

Heidi did that too. We would tell her firmly "No Bite!" and make sure she was given something that was okay to bite on. He will get it, if you are tough about it all the time. Don't ever "play bite" or he will think its still okay to do it. Good luck!

Yes. You're quite right...But's almost impossible to avoid sme little bittings in your legs. My own dogs did it when they were little, but they didn't do it any more when they grew up.

So true....especially the herding breeds. When we got our Golden Retriever mix, Chelsey, I was really eyeing these Australian Shepards that were the same age (8 weeks), at the shelter. Well, the workers there told me then that with young children (and having a daycare), you definitely don't want a 'herding dog'! They'll nip all their little ankles to try to herd them to one spot! Our puppy was into biting for a bit too. We would put a hand under his chin, point at him and say 'No!' firmly. Then, give him a toy that he could chew on. It took a little while, but he got the point and doesn't bite at all anymore (unless we're trying to clip his nails, but that's a whole other issue LOL). Good luck! Smile

I got marks in my ankles Laughing

Yes, I'm counting the days when his biting phase is over! For now, we always have some kind of toy with us so when he starts to bite, I firmly say no and put the toy in front of his mouth LOL
