Haiti Earthquake Empty
PostSubject: Haiti Earthquake   Haiti Earthquake EmptyThu Jan 14, 2010 11:32 am

I am just so distraught over this, I felt the need to add a topic. My heart just breaks for these people. No They've endured so much already, now they have the challenge of their worst natural disaster in history?! It just seems so very unfair. We have a tendancy to be down on our own country, but it's times like these I am so grateful to live where I do.

I am so worried about these college kids over there from Florida. There were 12, plus two faculty members. They say 7 are safe in the American Embassy, but 5 are still missing. I can't even imagine being one of the parents of these kids. I guess the kids arrived only hours before the quake hit. So awful.

They said on the news this morning that their prison was destroyed and all the prisoners are running free now, so they have the added fear of these "very dangerous men" out there. OhMy I can't even imagine the sheer panic these poor people are feeling at this point.

I am praying hard for this country. pray

It is a very sad event. I was watching coverage on it on TV and this reporter was saying how he could not sleep during the night because all he could hear was people crying and moans coming from under the rubble... I mean, how CAN you sleep through that? Blue

People are struggling to survive in with the food and water they have received so far but still so much needs to be done.

Yes---I think where they get the "100,000" death toll mark is also from people who may die just from lack of water or food, not necessarily from those who were injured in the actual quake. Hopefully we'll get more teams on the ground soon to help with that.

This just breaks my heart, too. We have missionaries from Haiti who are here on furlough, and it's killing them to not be there to help. I feel so bad for those poor souls over there. Haiti Earthquake 488555

I heard from a friend (through Facebook) who has communicated with someone in Haiti saying that the floor looked like waves and some were experiencing aftershocks every 1/2 hour. I can imagine how nervous some people must be.

I remember when I experienced that big Earthquake in LA and we had so many aftershocks.... it would make us a nervous wreck... because each time it made you think of the possibility of if triggering another big one. We slept on the floor and hearing the earth rumble and shake beneath you at night is a sure way to make you stay awake... scared scary! We would be tired the next day from not sleeping well.

It saddens me to think of people surviving the quake but then dying from lack of water and food. Hopefully help gets to the ones who are in an emergency need of care right now.

It is an extremely heartbreaking situation. It's impossible to watch the coverage with a dry eye and not feel absolute compassion for those people. I can't imagine what it is like to be there, or what it is like to have a family member there and not know if they are okay or not. They said for many of the dead trapped underneath the rubble, that rubble will become their permanent grave because it is just impossible to get to everyone. That made me tremendously sad for the families who won't be able to have that closure for their loved one. My heart and my prayers go out to all of those involved.

Isn't that the truth, Krissy. It puts it all into perspective, that's for sure.

Haiti Earthquake 6472 I had to share this.....My church is heading up a drive to raise money to send to a Haitian mission board that will be taking food, water and medicine to little villages that basically aren't even on the map....So, this morning we had a special offering for Haiti, and it was announced that we'd be collecting tonight as well - and on through next week. (There is a point to this story. Haiti Earthquake 440956 ) Well...One of the families in my church is a missionary family to Haiti, and they're on furlough here. Tonight, one of their daughters (whom they'd adopted from Haiti when she was a baby) brought her piggy bank to church and emptied it out into the offering plate. Haiti Earthquake 6472 I thought that was so beautiful and precious. She couldn't help but think that if she hadn't been adopted, she'd probably have been one of those in need, rather than one who could give help. Haiti Earthquake 25973 Haiti Earthquake 18022

That is such a sweet story, Savannah. It had to mean so much for her to help those in need. Thanks for sharing!

That is so amazing---what a sweet and selfless thing for her to do. loveheart Thank God that her parents adopted her. It breaks my heart more than anything to see the images of the poor children, many of them orphaned now.

I'm sure it has to be SO terribly difficult for people who are from Haiti living here, or elsewhere, to think of the devastation in their homeland. They have to feel so blessed to be where they are, and yet I'm sure there is a feeling of guilt and remorse that goes along with that, somehow. If I was living elsewhere, and heard about something like this happening here in the U.S., I would almost feel a need to be here. It's kind of like how many of us felt after hearing about the people in New York (on a lesser level of course)....you kind of just felt the need to be with those people and help in any way you could. It was a very powerful pull, and many people 'listened to it' and did make the trip there. I can imagine it's a similar feeling for many Haitians living away from their country now, on an even deeper level.

That's exactly what this family is saying, Amy. They're desperate to get back over there and help.

You know what's awesome?? In just two days, people have donated over $4,000 to our fund for the Haitians! And our local paper is picking up the story, too, so that should help spread the word. Haiti Earthquake 70708 It's wonderful to see people helping out like this. If everyone does a little, it will add up and make a difference in the lives of those poor souls.

And I agree, Amy....the children, especially, break my heart. Haiti Earthquake 18022

We know so much of what is going on over there because of tv, and I think at times it adds to our own anxiety. I for one haven't watched alot of this, I learned a lesson after 911. I had watched so much that I ended up dreaming about it at night.
We all need to put our thoughts in prayer to who we know has control and not watch so much of the stories.
The church I attend has sent money as well. I know this will rally much help and they will smile again.
It does break my heart for the children lost, but those children have been spared alot of life's struggles. We know they are in God's arms now for sure.

It's wonderful to see so many people giving. Haiti Earthquake 6472 I should mention, too, that the fund that I mentioned isn't just from my church.....it's a bunch of little churches, and individuals not even associated with a church who wanted to help. You know, a friend of mine said that they heard a commentator on the radio say "America gives because it's rich"....and whoever they were talking to corrected them, and said, "No. America is rich because it gives". I like that reply.

I wasn't even thinking of the little ones who died. Poor little souls - but as you said, they're in the arms of God now. I was thinking of the precious little children who are hungry and thirsty, and suffering because of what happened. Haiti Earthquake 18022 Life was hard enough for them to begin with, and now this....
