I'm thinking of doing a rather large drawing project that would combine history (which I LOVE) with drawing....I was thinking that it would be cool to do a montage of moments in recent (the past 100 years or so) American history that sealed themselves in the minds of those who were alive when that event took place...The kind of moment where, if someone asked you "Where were you when ________" you'd remember exactly where you were and what you were doing. What are some of those moments for you? And what are some of those events that you think would have had that impact on previous generations?

Are you talking about inventions or tragic events?

Because in my lifetime of memories the following events occurred that I could tell you exactly where I was.

1. JFK assassination (although I was quite little)
2. Nixon impeachment
3. Princess Diana's wedding and funeral
4. Space shuttles - challenger and Columbia explosions
5. September 11

I'm thinking major events - whether triumphant, like landing on the moon and the end of WWII, or tragic, like Sept. 11 and the Challenger.......And Amy, your response to the Challenger explosion is exactly what I mean. I remember right where I was - and even the sounds around me when I saw it happen. Those kind of moments in our history.

I think including a drawing of the famous picture of JFK Jr. saluting his father's casket would be great, but not sure if copyrights would be an issue.

It would be neat if you started with one drawing of the founding of the country, then one with the settling of the wild west, the first Transcontinental Railroad, and then moved quickly from there. Those things really defined us as a country, as did the American Civil War and the period of Reconstruction.

Other important things (some already mentioned):

Women win the right to vote (my husband still isn't thrilled with this one) Laughing
automobile
telephone
Industrial Revolution
WWI
WWII
Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech
Desegragation of schools
Vietnam
Computers/Internet
September 11th
America elects its first African American president

I'm sure there are others, but these came to mind.

Here are the moments I remember Smile

1985 - We Are The World: This historic collaborative effort was made in an effort to help Africa in 1985. Listen to Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, and many others as they join together for this moving song.

January 1986 - Space Shuttle Challenger Explosion: ABC did an extensive piece on the last moments of the Challenger crew before it crashed in January of 1986.

1989 - George H.W. Bush: The 41st President of the United States, he was inaugurated in 1989. He began his speech by giving thanks to President Reagan and his next act was to say a prayer.

November 1989 - Fall of the Berlin Wall: ABC covers the history and fall of the Berlin wall. It includes footage of the wall coming down and the accompanying celebration.

September 11, 2001 - ABC News September 11th Coverage: Peter Jennings and others cover this historic event in American and world history. Fifteen parts begin right after the second plane crashes and continues after the second tower falls.

You could almost do a drawing of ALL the tragic events of ONE family....Kennedys come to mind.
The assassination of JFK, John Jr. death, Jackie, Teddy..... That might be too sad though.

I was in Science class watching when the Challenger went up.

OR just narrow it down.......a family standing around their first refrigerator. The Mom smiling proud, the Dad with the paperwork in hand, a little boy looking an ice cube tray(the metal ones) over, and a girl sitting a jar of milk on an empty shelf. ???

If you are like me Savannah, you have all of this stuff just sitting in your head and you've GOT to find a way to get it out, down your arm and through that pencil!!! Good Luck.

So many that came to my mind are already listed. I don't know if this is really what you are looking for, but I remember even as a child, hearing about the death of Elvis and seeing the impact it had on the people around me is something that I still remember very clearly. Even the death of Michael Jackson was a complete shock. I remember hearing that he was being rushed to the hospital and thinking he will end up being okay soon. But, when they broke in just a short time later to announce he had died, Tim and I were just completely shocked. Neither of us were really fans, but hearing about the death of someone who was such a part of the time we lived and grew up in was really shocking.

Ooooooh, that's a COOL idea!! The picture of JFK Jr. saluting his father's casket is actually one that came to my mind, too, Cheryl. I'm pretty sure I'd have to get permission to use the photo . . . . I wonder how I'd go about that.

Thank you so much everyone! And feel free to keep 'em coming!

What if you draw the same picture, John Jr saluting his fathers casket, but at a different angle? You wouldn't need a copyright then would you. Just use that pic as a model but draw him different, like his profile or something. Just a thought.

Elvis and Michael Jackson's deaths were certainly monumental. Also the death of John Lennon. You put that so well, Pam....it really doesn't matter if you're a fan or not---just hearing about the deaths of these iconic people was a huge thing.

Julia, that is great historical picture! Thumbsup

Savannah, I'm thinking Rosie the Riveter would be a good addition too....she represents a huge part of that era for women.

If you're going to make a drawn collage, no copyright is violated.
