WASHINGTON -- NASA will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. EST on Thursday, Dec. 2, to discuss an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life. Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution and future of life in the universe.

...

I'm interested to hear what this is all about.

I was reading about that just a little while ago. Very interesting! In one of the articles I read, there was a quote that I found puzzling, though:

One scientist wrote:
We have always looked for alien life that matches our biology, but now we have found a different life-form that uses arsenic in its basic DNA structure, he said.

Watch the skies... 988160 I'm completely baffled by that. Why would there be a long-standing presumption that alien life would match our biology? (In the context of the article, that's what he was saying. But maybe he was misquoted.) I'd have presumed pretty much the opposite...that their basic DNA structure would be different than our own, especially since their environment would obviously be quite different than ours. Very odd. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what all comes of this.

That's the basis of the announcement - that they've discovered a microbe in a California lake that thrives on arsenic.

Yeah, I've always been baffled by the assumption that life can only exist in environments that match our own. Watch the skies... 988160

This was a story on our local news this morning. They didn't report any more than what you posted, Rob. I'm also interested in hearing more.
