Two WWII aircraft to visit Visalia airport; rides offered

Flight enthusiasts can get close to two restored World War II aircraft at the Visalia Municipal Airport starting today.

And those with deeper pockets can even buy a ride.

A B-17 Flying Fortress and a B-25 Mitchell will be on display at the airport from noon to 6 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Visalia Municipal Airport is at 9501 W. Airport Drive. The B-17 and B-25 will be on display in front of the airport's administration building.

The restored World War II bombers are from the Commemorative Air Force's Arizona Wing Aviation Museum, based in Mesa, Ariz.

The B-17 dates back to 1944. Nicknamed "Sentimental Journey," it is one of about eight B-17s around the world that are still flying, museum officials said.

The B-25, nicknamed "Maid in the Shade," is a veteran of 18 combat missions flying out of Corsica (an island in the Mediterranean Sea) during World War II, museum officials said. It took 28 years to get the B-25 restored to flying condition, a project finished in 2009.

Tours are $5 for adults, $3 for children 5 through 12 and free for those younger than 5.

Flights are also available: $425 per person on the B-17 and $395 per person on the B-25. A limited amount of flights will be scheduled.

The Arizona Wing is an all-volunteer organization whose members are dedicated to preserving aviation history and wartime memorabilia.
