David Joy - Para Gliding: Ron takes to the skies in the Riverland region of South Australia

There are many ways to enjoy South Australia's spectacular scenery and on Postcards we've tried most of them whether kayaking up the backwaters of the Murray on the Pike River near Loxton or four wheel driving to the highest peaks in the Flinders Ranges. We've sampled the delights of Wilpena Pound from a light aircraft, and at times we've pushed the envelope when it comes to adventure tourism with a close-up encounter with the White Pointers at the Neptune Islands, South of Port Lincoln.

But there's one thing I won't do - power para-gliding. I'll leave it to a Waitpinga farmer and builder, named David Joy.

In his study at home an array of still shots chart David Joy's amazing flights around his own back yard, but it's the video footage shot on a small eighteen hundred dollar Sony Hi-Def camera that gets the heart racing.

David Joy, Para glider: "It's just the absolute freedom and low flying. There's no other means that you can get to enjoy flying like that."

In the air, David can indulge himself by setting a course for parts of the Fleurieu Peninsula that many of us never get to see. David started free flying off cliffs without any mechanised propulsion but watching others hover over The Bluff at Victor got him hooked so much so that he's now produced his own how-to video for Powered Para Gliding.

When you see David's gear up close you really just how flimsy this flying machine really is - it's little more than a harness, a lawn mower engine and blade - it's a big fan.

David Joy, Para glider: "Often in the winter you get calm weather in the morning and that's the best time for photography because the lighting is good. So apart from being limited by the weather - the sky is the limit."

The sky is the limit indeed for David Joy. The amazing vision and still images from his powered para gliding flights are available on-line. You can contact him direct on 0428 385 052. More questions ? email info@postcards-sa.com.au
