'Little House on the Prairie' inspiration on display at MVC library
Wednesday, October 18, 2006

The Murrell Library at Missouri Valley College is hosting a 16-panel traveling exhibit on the life and work of Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the "Little House" books that were the basis for the long-running TV show. Featuring period photographs, quotes from the author, and other historical information relating to Wilder, her "Little House" books, and America's westward expansion, the exhibit is free and open to the public, and runs from Oct. 16 through Nov.17.
Hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m., Sunday from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m., and closed on Saturdays. The exhibit may be viewed in the Teacher Education Library (Tech Center) on the MVC campus.

Third graders from Eastwood Elementary School in Marshall will visit as they have been studying pioneers this year. Activities include tasting of authentic recipes from Laura's cookbook, readings of the famous "Little House" books, pencil games, checkers, listening to "Pa's" (Laura's father) fiddle music, and listening to recordings of Laura's voice.

"We would love to have students from the surrounding areas visit the display," said Pam Reeder, director of the Murrell Library.

Wilder is best known for her series of well-loved children's books. In those books, her life as a pioneer girl is told from the perspective of a child, and it is in this voice that she is able to communicate her early life so successfully to the children who continue to read her stories. After spending much of her life in Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas and South Dakota, Wilder and her husband Almanzo settled in Mansfield in 1894, where she lived until her death in 1957 at the age of 90. Wilder wrote regularly for the "Missouri Ruralist," among other magazines, but was not well known until the publication of "Little House in the Big Woods" in 1932. The book was an instant success. With the encouragement of her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, she continued to add to the Little House collection.

The Murrell Library staff encourages the public to come visit the exhibit, which highlights the era of the "Pioneer Days." For more information or for groups larger than 10 please contact Pam Reeder at (660) 831-4123 or reederp@moval.edu.
