(Reuters) - Bookseller Borders Group Inc (BGP.N) could file for bankruptcy as soon as Monday or Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The company is in the final stages of preparing a bankruptcy filing after failing to persuade publishers and other to go along with a plan to restructure its debt, the paper reported.

"There have been constant inquiries by reporters and stories written regarding whether Borders is considering a Chapter 11 filing. Borders is not prepared at this time to report on the course of action that it will pursue," said Mary Davis, a spokeswoman for Borders.

Publishers Weekly has been talking about this for a while. Here's a link to several articles:

http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/bookselling/article/45966-borders-watch.html

E-Books are having a huge impact on this industry. It's an exciting time to be an author because e-Books come to market faster, but it's not a good thing for everyone.

I hate to see any business go under but I'm kind of apathetic to chain book stores. In every city I've lived in I have shopped local mom and pop bookstores. The owners have a genuine love and knowledge of books.
Regarding e-books; they are an abomination but inevitable I suppose. I love the touch, the smell, the weight, the dings and blemishes old books have. I do not think I will ever own an e-reader. But then again, I never thought I would have owned a cell phone. Yikes

Last month was the first month that ebooks outsold 'real' books. Some are predicting a 50% reduction in books produced in THE NEXT 5 YEARS!!
I don't know but I do know I only saw one e-reader on the plane yesterday. Flying back from New York I was suprised at how many people were reading books.
Rob, what in the heck is a Luddite? Nevermind, I will look it up myself IN A BOOK CALLED THE DICTIONARY.
No I won't. I'm lying. I'm going to use Google, its quicker. Borders filing for Bankruptcy 85958

"In modern usage, "Luddite" is a term describing those opposed to industrialisation, automation, computerisation or new technologies in general."

Absolutely my "abomination" comment can be construed as Ludditesque. (I think I just made up a new word)
But you won't find me taking up arms or ripping e-readers from the hands of those that choose to use them and tearing them asunder.
As humans I suppose we have been a bit reluctant to embrace change, this is nothing new.
Thanks for teaching me a new word.

I was never a big fan of e-Books until I got my Kindle. It's changed how I read. Though I will always love the feel of printed books and will continue to buy them, my Kindle allows me to keep the clutter down in my house, and if I read a book I don't care for, I can just delete it.

Well, no-one expected the Spanish Inquisition either. Or for that matter that 1000's of books can be held between grubby, wanting fingertips, with fake sunlight illuminating words on a device made from the devil. If God wanted us to read from e-books he would have made it standard with every new born.

You haven't seen my house. With the two kids and four cats, everything feels like clutter.

I like to borrow e-books from the library on occasion to listen to while I walk or bike. But otherwise I agree. It's easier on my eyes to read a hard copy of a book, too. Plus a lot of the books that I love will probably never make it into e-format. I love to haunt used bookstores and antique stores looking for old gems that will gleefully be read, and then make their way onto my overcrowded, double-stacked bookshelves. I heard this, too. I love Borders - it's pretty much the only bookstore close to us that we have. Sometimes I like to go just to walk around and look at books...hubby and I actually had our first date there 6 years ago! LOL. I wonder if they'll close some of their stores? On Good Morning America over the summer, I believe, there was a segment on a young girl who loved reading and her local mall closed their local bookstore - I can't remember the town or the name of the bookstore, but it was basically about how, with bookstores closing, there won't be any close by. It's a shame, when I was little, my mother would take me to the used book store pretty regularly. I haven't gotten into the eBooks at all, so I don't really know too much about them.

We went to Borders on Saturday and things were 20-40% off. You would have thought by the lines that things were 90% off. We did walk away with 4 good books, on a good note. Wink

Unless I get one really cheap, or have been given one as a gift, I don't plan on owning a Kindle or anything of that sort. I much prefer to physically hold a BOOK in my hand. Also, I am a book collector. The only time I ever get rid of one is if I truly HATED the book. Call it clutter. Call me a hoarder. I don't care. I love books!

I look forward to this big book sale every year that we have here and I really stock up well with that place in early March (unfortunately their prices went up a dollar and that dollar makes a BIG difference). I also LOVE this catalog company (you can't call them or order over the internet - mail only): http://edwardrhamilton.com/. I have gotten some books incredibly cheap there. Some of them were even books that I couldn't find anywhere else. The only problem is that I have to order something as soon as I see it because they do sell out.

As for Borders, I have been spending a lot of money lately that I don't have (I always preferred them over Barnes and Noble). I never went to the one downtown (I don't feel like paying for parking for that). I went to the one on the southside a couple of times during the sale. Then I went back there, since I went out that way, on Friday evening. They were down to 80% off. They were really getting empty. I was happy to see there were some books still there that I wanted before but I didn't feel like paying less than 60% for them. So I was even happier to get them for 80% off. In fact, the checkout girl was so happy at what I saved! The savings ended up just under $400 for all those books. I would say that is quite a deal!
