Today is the 36th anniversary of the sinking of The Edmund Fitzgerald, just north of Whitefish Point on Lake Superior. Some of the crew were very young men - only 20 years old....and some were in their 60s, and were probably grandpas. Gordon Lightfoot wrote this song as a tribute to the men who lost their lives when the Edmund Fitzgerald went down on November 10, 1975. It has always brought tears to my eyes, anyway, but the end of this video was especially moving to me when it started to list the names and faces of the twenty-nine lives that ended that day.

Great post Miss Savannah.
Fantastic songwriting based on a tragic event.
Is it me or are the best songs based on events that mirror our love of humanity and uncertainty of the human existance?
Omitting all the sappy love songs, of course. We have had quite enough of them. bawling

Gary starts singing the first verse of that song when we're driving sometimes. I think his sister had the sheet music for it. That and Convoy.

I love Gordon Lightfoot and the songs he sings....his voice is so different from most. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is a beautiful tribute to those men.... Blue

Thanks for the song, Savannah. Unless I'm mistaken, this is the last major maritime disaster on the Great Lakes.
