Poison Ivy

We just came from the hospital with Payton. He has poison ivy all over his face. I'm really worried about the spot near his tear duct. It is the next step from being in his eyes. The poor thing is wanting to itch his face so bad. We talked to him and explained why he couldn't. He's on prescription Diphenhydramine and Prednisolone. The DR. said the itch one would take effect after the 1st and for sure 2nd dose. He takes that one 4 times a day. One thing that bothers me. The nurse checking us out said, if it gets it in his eyes he could go blind. I wanted to cry there. I went home and called my stepmom. She said that she never heard of such and she has been around poison ivy all her life. My step mom said if they was really concerned about Payton's eyes they would have kept him. Don't get me wrong I understand Payton needs to keep his hands away from his face especially his eyes. I just don't know what to think about her comment. Payton is napping at the moment. He's just miserable.

Poor little guy, my middle boy works on a ranch and got poison ivy not too long ago. He took himself to the clinic and got a hot right away to relieve the iching and calm the ivy down.

I have never heard of going blind if it gets in your eyes either....might need to call another clinic just for a second opinion....this nurse might be trying to do her own diagnosis and it might be completley wrong.......I had a nurse try and diagnos me when I was having problems.....she said I had a bladder infection and prescribed those little orange/red pills for me......bladder infection? No, I had cysts in my bladder from cancer coming back a second time.....I guess that is why they are nurses and not doctors.......get that second opinion to feel better about things......

For the itching, calamine lotion is good, he'll have a pink face, but he won't itch....also....Aveeno is good if it spreads anywhere else.....Aveeno baths are good, it is basically oatmeal and other ingredients, but you might be able to make a mask mixture to pat on his face......

When I was a child I had poison ivy all over my arms, face and legs...and I DID itch and it DID get in my eyes...

I didnt go blind (obviously) but it sure swelled up and stung like heck!

It might be one of those things that "can" happen on the rare occasion...but it is unlikely.

Poor little guy though, I really feel for him...and you.

How horrible!! My oldest had poison ivy last summer. It is such a miserable experience.

I think they have the clear kind now.. I bought some calamine lotion for a wasp sting I got a few months back.

Thank you guys. I'm doing the Aveeno like a mask. It's amazing. The redness and the need to scratch has gone away. The itch medician is doing wonders too. I was so worried about him yesterday. All he could do is scratch his eyes and face. Now he don't even have the desire to scratch.:woohooo: I feel so much better about Payton today. He is staying home from school at least tomorrow.

Does anyone know how to get rid of poison ivy? We have woods right behind the house the boys play in all the time. At the moment they are not allowed to play in them. Any suggestions?

I have heard the best thing to do is find exactly where it is and with a long sleeve shirt and gloves on, pull it up like you would weeds and put them down in a trash bag and throw it away. If Payton is having as much trouble with it as he has, you want to made sure you do NOT burn it......the spores travel and spread even worse......
