Hi all!

One of the final presentations from my Legal Ethics of Special Education class was on "Pica" (the persistent eating of non-food items). The presenter provided us with the link to this article...i thought it was fascinating...

I remember that a couple of years ago a young man made it into the news here in Germany, who suffered from Pica too. In a hospital the doctors removed several nails, spoons, other metallic stuff and a 30 cm long kitchen knife from his stomach. OhMy
Fortunally the man survived.

That is sad...
I read that someone with pica may eat clay, dirt, metal, paper, animal feces, paint, ice or hair. This disorder is most common in children, persons with mental retardation, and pregnant women. Teenagers with iron deficiency may eat ice. Pica may occur for no known reason.

I wonder if anyone ever offered him a penny for his thoughts? That's my two cents! grinsmiley
