Does anyone know why Laura's dog Jack was written out of the series? Other than perhaps the Jack in LIW's books dies when Laura is a teenager (in Little Town on the Prairie, I think). I liked Jack alot. I liked Bandit too, but I liked Jack better.

Barney, who played Jack, died in real life. Though the real LIW's dog died in real life, I think they would have kept him around longer on the show.

I read somewhere that Barney was a rescue from a shelter.

He was a cute dog and I loved Jack more than Bandit, but I love all animals.

I had a dog named Fella at the time Jack was on the show. He looked just like Jack. We found him behind a Weeping Willow tree dead one afternoon. It was SO sad. Not sure if it was before or after Jack died on the show. But I totally remember that feeling of loss everytime I see that episode.

We didn't see much of Bandit in the later seasons, and when we did he was just a prop. Early on, he actually played a part in the plot, e.g. "The Wolves", and of course "Castoffs". It would have made sense I think if Bandit had stayed with Laura and Almanzo, since he didn't seem too happy in Winoka.

Aww, I'm sorry. How sad.

Pit Bulls accompanied pioneer familes on their explorations. Laura Ingalls Wilder of the popular Little House books owned a working Pit Bulldog named Jack. Famous individuals like Theodore Roosevelt and Helen Keller owned the breed. It was during this time that the Pit Bull truly became America's sweetheart breed, admired, respected and loved
