In 1894 Laura Ingalls Wilder, her husband, Almanzo and their daughter, Rose left De Smet and traveled to Mansfield, Missouri. Laura recorded their journey in a diary, and these entries are composed in this book.

I loved reading this book. It is inteesting reading about their travels as they pass over the land that took months back then. It only takes hours to go the same distance today.

I agree, Marilyn. Also it seems like they had to think of so much more when they were travelling than we do today. Things are just so much easier today but by the same token, it was a simpler time back then. Everything revolved around famiyl and it's really nice to read about. I love reading about their travels!

I loved this book as well! I love how vividly Laura describes the people and scenery they came across.. It almost makes you feel as if you are there with them!

I loved reading this book too.
I liked all the details about the all the different people and places, Laura and Almanzo met on their way. As it was Lauras personal diary, I feld it was even more authentic than her other books, where she described her experiences for the young readers, smoothened the hardships etc.
I also liked the stories, Rose added at the end, especially the one about the poor man, who asked for work, right after the Wilders reached what later would become Rocky Rich Farm. Almanzo gave him some food for his family, although they were also short of everything. Perhaps he was just dewy-eyed when he gave away the food-filled pan to a stranger, but I prefer to see another sample of a wonderful character in his acting.

The book is a great addition to LIW's other books.

I don't know if we have any farmers here but what stood out to me in this book was the farmer in Laura. She gives (somewhat boring) details of the weather and crops along the way which is so true to the way real farm folks think. When we get letters from our farming friends back in South Dakota, they do the same thing; they mention crop prices, weather and the issues farmers face. I loved living in the farming community in SD. because it makes the little house books so much more real for me. It also confirmed to me that I was NOT born to be a farmer myself. That doesn't stop me from enjoying reading about farm life though.
