Oh the pain!

The dangers of celebrating too early:   a mid-air fist pump a few feet before the finish line costs Aussie biker Meghan Rutledge the victory at the X-Games in Los Angeles.

Reminds me of when snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis just had to throw in a little showboat maneuver on the next to last jump of what would have been her gold medal run.

Aaannd this guy.   

 

Just goes to show you, you cannot start celebrating until you can really celebrate.  Our high school in Greenwood, AR was in the State playoffs....we were in the last play of the night, we had the ball, three yards from goal.  All we needed was a 2-point conversion, and the guy to make it (who, by the way, was the WHOLE team, you know the kind) got a little bit cocky at the end and BLEW IT!  You should've heard the gasp from the crowd....almost sucked the ball back behind the line......We were heart broken!!!

WE HAD IT!  WE COULD TASTE IT!  And.....WE LOST IT!  

 What exactly did the kid do to blow the play?

All he had to do was get over the line, but decided to do a celebratory 'dance' on his way....got tripped up and messed the whole play.....  

Oh, that's brutal, Rhonda!    People who do things like that should realize that there's absolutely NO upside to it. If the Greenwood guy had done his dance and then scored, I'm guessing nobody would have been impressed or thought he was cool. They would've thought he was a cocky bleepity-bleep. The way it turned out, he was a cocky bleepity-bleep who cost his team a shot at the championship.

   Spanish cyclist Eloy Teruel was left with egg on his face after prematurely celebrating a stage win at the Tour of California.

Teruel stormed into the lead as he approached the stage finish and believing he was on his final lap, celebrated enthusiastically as he crossed the line.

However he was soon made to look somewhat foolish as the race had one more lap to go and all the other riders knew it.

He slowly realized the error of his ways, but it was too late, and Teruel ended up finishing tragically in 56th place - not quite worthy of such extravagant celebrations.

I've heard of things like this happening before... how embarassing...    I bet in the future these people will keep going well past the finish of their races to make sure they actually do finish
