It's a social network like myspace or friendster. Myspace will always be the #1 social network in my opinion. I don't facebook that much either, but I have a lot of friends over there.

I dumped MySpace a while ago and I'm now on Facebook. I only really use it to network with people within the publishing industry; and since I am such a technology dummy I only know how to use half the features on most of these social networks.

It's a reunion year for me, so I got on facebook to network with old classmates. And, ahem, keep an eye on my kids. batEyes So far I like it, but I don't 'do' much on it either.

A whole bunch of parents at my church are on facebook for this very reason. They have a LOT of fun, and at the same time, keep an eye on what's going on with their kids. It actually has been a way for the kids to interact with a lot of the adults in my church in ways that they wouldn't have otherwise. (Apparently, there's a huge snowball fight going on with the crew of them - And they couldn't really throw snowballs at older people in church, you know? )

I have friends whose mom has a myspace and facebook just to check up on what her kids are doing. personally, I don't think children below 9th grade should be on facebook, but thats just my opinion.

I agree. And, interestingly, so do most of the parents in my church. I think the youngest one in my church who is on facebook is 14.

Some of them have a family account, where everyone in the family shares one account, too.

I'm actually amazed my college son allowed me as one of his 'friends', to tell you the truth! Even his friends have invited me on theirs too! I mean, that's a huge infringement of privacy at that age, if you think about it, but he's really cool with it and I try not to be too much into his business. batEyes I've actually learned a great deal about him...kids act totally different with friends than they do with their parents, and this is a different side that I see of him...especially his sense of humor, which is very dry...and, dare I say it...a bit 'George Carlin-esque'. help Ahem, minus the graphic profanity of course. :shifty:

With age, I consider it a maturity thing...my younger son is almost 14, but only in 8th grade because he missed the cut-off date. Had he wanted a facebook page, I would have let him have one this year, just because he could easily have been in high school this year. He does want one now, BUT, he'll only get it if he lets me on his page, even when he's in high school. That may seem a bit excessive, but kids have to earn trust, and you're NOT an adult in high school. When he's on his own in college, it's his choice because he'll be an adult....right now the computer is under our roof and we as parents get to decide what kind of access our underage kids gets to it. I think most of our problems in our society are because of lack of involvement in kids' lives by the parents---too many parents are 'friends' and are shirking their duties of guidance. Ok...getting off my soapbox now. grinsmiley

Not to totally change the subject here, but I am reading a book called Born Liberal, Raised Right by Reb Bradley. While it is very much tied into politics, the premise of the book indicates that everyone is born a liberal thinker and focused on self-gratification, but parents who allow that type of behavior to continue without teaching their children self-control are the ones creating the problems in this country. It's an interesting approach because I see a lot of what he is saying on our street, where families lavish gifts of all kinds on their children and those children grow up to expect things from society.

I thought the same thing with MySpace, Amy, about being surprised that some of Devin's friends have invited me as their friends as well. And for awhile, Devin even had me in his #1 spot. I told him that was totally uncool of him to have his mom as the #1 person on his page. :haha: Finally, he changed it. They are so different around their friends, I agree. I see some of this not only on his MySpace page (as well as his friends), but just at our house as well, since our house has become one of the favorite hangout spots lately. Part of that is because Devin and his friends are interested in playing music now and are starting a band and Devin is the drummer and it'd be a bit difficult because it's not so easy to transport a drum kit around for practices, so our house is the place. I like it though, I really get to know his friends, and I know what they are doing. It's a bit noisier these days at my house, but that's okay with me.

I agree to, that it's a maturity thing. I started letting Devin have a MySpace account when he was 12, with the stipulation that I had access to his account so that I could check up on things. I don't check up much, but I do check every once in awhile just to see who his friends are, and things like that.

Anyhow, I do have a Facebook, but rarely ever go to it. I just don't like it as much as MySpace or MyYearbook.

ROTFL Nope, not cool at all, Devin! :haha: I didn't know you can 'rank' people on a MySpace...sounds like that might get kinda sticky.

Our house has always been the same way Pam, since Brendan hit high school, and we live out of the district! (he was in through Schools of Choice). I really enjoyed having his friends here and developed great relationships with them. I got to be known as the "kool-aide' mom (LOL, literally Wink ), and, like you said, even though it was LOUD here at times, it was so worth it. These friends of his that I'm now on facebook with are all the ones who visited our house on a regular basis. So important.

Cool that Devin is in a band now!! LOL, the only 'band' my kids have is "Rock Band"...they love it and so do I!

Don't feel the need to get off your soapbox anytime soon, Amy. I couldn't agree with you more. I'm constantly surrounded by children whose parents don't seem to care what they do. And where are the parents? On computer! And if the child does happen to "interrupt" the parent in their oh-so-important computer game, they're quickly rebuffed. That sends such an obvious message that the computer (or tv, or whatever it may be) is more important to that parent than their child is. I'm not saying that parents can't/shouldn't spend any time on the computer. But for heaven sake, there's only one opportunity to be a good parent! And there are so many situations that children can find themselves in now! Parents need to be parents, not buddies. Children need guidance and instruction, and most of them just aren't getting it anymore. No

You don't necessarily rank people, but they do have a "Top Friends" List, and you can select as many people as you want to be on it. But, it does stay in a certain order, so yeah, I guess you do rank them in a way. Huh? But yeah, it is a big deal to certain people. I remember when my son went through problems because he rearranged his AIM list. You would have thought WWIII had started the way a couple of the girls from his school acted because of it. I just told him, if they make you feel bad about it, then are they really your friends? He agreed, but he still has to deal with these people at school.

Yeah, I hope Devin's friends always feel comfortable coming here. You can tell they are now by the way they just help themselves to whatever. :haha: Oh yeah, and Tim loves the fact that Devin is into music now. Tims in a band himself, and has been invovled in music since way before I knew him, so he's in his glory.

I graduated from bible college in 1990 and when I joined Facebook I found a lot of old friends that I haven't seen or heard from in ages. It a great way to keep in touch. We have a special group that we all belong to.

in the past year Facebook has become just as popular as My Space...if not more so. I have accounts on both sites, but I almost never check the My Space account anymore because nobody I know really uses it. Almost everyone I know is on Facebook...even my mother!

The only advantages that My Space has over Facebook is that you can add music to your page and have customized theme/wallpaper....
