Quote of the Day Thumbsup

"Our real blessings often appear to us in the shape of pains, losses and disappointments, but let us have patience and we soon shall see them in their proper figures."

– Joseph Addison

About Joseph Addison

English politician and writer Joseph Addison is remembered as a cofounder, along with his friend Richard Steele, of The Spectator, one of the first magazines to cover literature and manners. He was born in 1672 in Wiltshire. He spent four years traveling in Europe, studying politics and writing poetry, and became a Commissioner of Appeals on his return to England. His shyness made public office difficult. His most famous work is the play Cato, a tragedy about ancient Rome. He died in 1719.

Quote of the Day GreenSmile

"We cannot live for ourselves alone. Our lives are connected by a thousand invisible threads, and along these sympathetic fibers, our actions run as causes and return to us as results."

– Herman Melville

About Herman Melville

American author Herman Melville is best known for his epic whaling novel, Moby-Dick, which wasn't recognized as a masterpiece until after his death. He was born in New York in 1819. At age 20, he went to sea on a whaling ship. His seafaring adventures included time with cannibals in the Marquesas Islands, the basis for his successful novel Typee. His later, more philosophical, novels were not as well received as his early adventure yarns, and he died in obscurity in 1891.

And my favorite is the main reason men get married is cause their mamma's get tired of raising them so they have to get a wife to raise them. ROTFL

Quote of the Day Thumbsup

"Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better."
– Samuel Beckett

About Samuel Beckett

Samuel Beckett, the absurdist Irish playwright known for his darkly funny minimalist plays like Waiting for Godot and Endgame, won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1969 and reportedly gave away most of the money to needy artists. He was born in Dublin in 1906 and moved to France to join the resistance during World War II. His plays, poetry, and novels used elements from burlesque and vaudeville to explore the human struggle to make sense of life. He died in 1989.

Male menopause is a lot more fun than female menopause. With female menopause you gain weight and get hot flashes. Male menopause — you get to date young girls and drive motorcycles. - John Wayne

Quote of the Day

"The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right place, but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment."

– Lady Dorothy Nevill

About Lady Dorothy Nevill

Lady Dorothy Nevill, the noted British gardener, was one of the most celebrated society hostesses of her day; her salons attracted leading writers, artists, and statesmen. She was born Dorothy Walpole in 1826 in England. She married a wealthy cousin with a 23-acre estate, where she pursued her interest in plants. She built 13 greenhouses and carried on an extensive correspondence with Charles Darwin. Her memoir, Leaves From the Note-Books of Lady Dorothy Nevill, was published in 1906. She died in 1913.

Love these quotes! Rose Red, do you know who the author is of your quote? On the Dr. Quinn forum, a lot of people have quotes in their signature, with the author listed, and I'd really like to use yours! It reminds me of "Richest Man" too, so it would be like a little piece of Little House is over there with me in that forum too! Thumbsup

Quote of the Day

"Within us all there are wells of thought and dynamos of energy which are not suspected until emergencies arise."

– Thomas J. Watson

About Thomas J. Watson
American businessman Thomas J. Watson built IBM into a Fortune 500 company. He was born in rural New York in 1874. He sold sewing machines, musical instruments, and cash registers before becoming president of the Computing-Tabulating-Recording company, which merged with IBM in 1924. His paternalistic business style was a model for later Japanese management, and his motto, "THINK," became his company's slogan. Under his leadership, IBM funded the first computers. He died in 1956.

I'm not Rose Red - but I did some checking since I was wondering, too. It's such a good quote! It's an anonymous quote, as far as I could find. (That "Anonymous" fella sure has written a lot of good quotes......) GreenSmile
