This movie was on last night (4/20) on CBS. Marlee Matlin and Jeff Daniels gave a great preformance. I was just wondering who all watched this and wondering what your feedback might be.
This couple was faced with the possiblity of implanting a device into there sons head to help him hear again. The father(Jeff Daniels) wanted it done and the mom(Marlee Matlin) did not.
I was just wondering what you might have done if given the choice.??

I think after reviewing the procedure with Doctors I might not have had it done. It would have been so scary to drill into my childs brain.
If you haven't watched this movie, It will be released by Hallmark soon. It would make a good buy.

I saw the preview for it, if that counts. GreenSmile

{{{Gin}}} Don't feel bad, Gin. I never see any movies on tv. I didn't even see the preview, so Jon is doing better than I am.

I *am* aware of the HUGE debate there is in the Deaf community about cochlear implants. I have a friend who is Deaf, and she's okay with the idea of a cochlear implant. But one of her friends, who is also Deaf, is militantly against it. She says that it's a slap in the face of deaf people everywhere. (And also says a whole lot more than I won't go into...... ) But at any rate .........No, I didn't see the movie.

I always enjoyed Marlee Matlin when she'd do guest spots on West Wing, though. GreenSmile Does that help my case any? Shifty

LOL Savannah.....its okay. I know how busy the evenings are sometimes . I really wasn't aware there was a debate about the Cochlear Implants. It would be tough to decide to have it done with your own child. I guess I think of all the accomplishments of Helen Keller not to mention Marlee Matlin.

If you all do get a chance to watch this movie DO its great.

I wasn't aware of a 'big debate' either, but admittedly (as embarrassing as this is) I'm not exactly 'up' on the deaf community. I would have a major problem drilling into my child's head too---obviously a life-risk--in order to regain one of their senses. Very tough call and I guess I couldn't know or judge until I was in that position, God forbid.

I did see the preview for that and meant to watch it---I love Jeff Daniels and Marlee is great.

I wouldn't have been aware of a debate over it, either, except for the fact that things turns ugly REALLY fast when those implants are mentioned in the Deaf community. It's an extremely hot-button issue. From what I was told, they feel that the hearing community is trying to "fix the defective people" - and they certainly don't feel the need to be "repaired". They love their culture. And, they're afraid that their culture will disappear if the implants are used on a mass level.

.........I have no idea what I would do. I mean, there are obvious benefits.....But the risks are so great! Even having heard the arguments for both sides, I still have no clue what I would do. It isn't as if it's a case of "If you use the implants, your child will hear normally". It doesn't really work quite like that. Anyway.........the movie sounds very interesting, Gin!

So, what did the parents decide to do in the movie?

Well....that would give it away! I will tell you it really caused a ripple in their marriage. They were torn and it really divided them. It was one of the cleanest movies I've seen in a long time. Hallmark really does stay true to family programming.
