I absolutely LOVE them!!! Both the TV show and the music. I will be seeing them in concert in July. This will be my first time since 1987 since I have seen them. grinsmiley I can't wait! I just wish that one of these times Mike Nesmith would tour with them. He is my favorite. Maybe if they are all still in good health five years from now he would do a 50th anniversary tour (fingers are tightly crossed).

Anyway, these are my top 5 favorite songs of theirs:
5.

4.

3.
(far superior, I think, to the more known slow version)

2.

1.
(This song is just so great! One minute and 50 seconds of complete bliss for me. grinsmiley )

Yes, 3 out of 5 of these were written by the completely great, but incredibly underrated Mike Nesmith. grinsmiley

Yup, loved the Monkees! Grew up listening to 'em. I'd never heard that version of I Wanna Be Free. I kind of miss the Beatlesque cello. Any fans of The Monkees here? 811339

I love the Monkees. My favorite songs are "The Girl I Knew Somewhere", "As We Go Along", "Good Clean Fun" and "(I'm not your) Stepping Stone". Almost all of their songs set my toes to tappin' except for some of the cornier Davy Jones songs (I have always thought Mike did their best songs).

I have both seasons of the show on DVD. My favorite episodes are "The Monkees Get Out More Dirt", "Monkee See Monkee Die", "Monkee Chow Mein", and "The Spy Who Came In From The Cool".

Just for you, Rob Smile :

That other version (which has Davy and Micky singing together - and then Micky has his solo part) was on the pilot episode, "Here Come The Monkees". And you can find it on their "Missing Links" CD, Volume 2.

Well, they recently went back on tour this year, and they are claiming it to be a 45th anniversary tour. There are videos out there, but I am kind of avoiding looking for them because I don't want to see anything from the tour until I actually see it. Know what I mean?
Oh, well, I suppose that doesn't mean that I should keep you from seeing any, right? Smile

I do know that they are singing like 40+ songs. So they are definitely giving me my money's worth! Smile

Oh, Mike is definitely the best. And I think he is so underrated as a songwriter and an artist.

When Davy has a good song like "Forget That Girl" or "Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow", I love them, but I am not so much a fan of his voice.

I have all of the seasons recorded. My brother recorded them when MTV first showed them. About 10 years later I made copies of what he had. I want to get them on DVD, but they are so expensive. Is there a cheaper collection out there? The only ones that I know of are the ones that are in the case that is like a record player, I think.

My number one favorite episode is right here:

Other favorites: "Fairy Tale", "The Monkees' Christmas Show", "Monkees vs. Machine", "The Chaperone", "Hillbilly Honeymoon" and "One Man Shy".

I used that as a link once to a different part of a profile of a site that I was once on. And once I did that, the number of views that it received was ridiculous! I know people just wanted to know what that was (I don't know if anyone actually knew). Or maybe these people were genuinely concerned about the preservation of the Texas Prairie Chicken. grinsmiley

After I sent the post I thought that maybe a prairie chicken line might cause some questions. I'm not sure if the prairie chicken ever had a plight, but I remember searching for a button like Mikes for a long time.

I lucked out on the dvd sets a few years ago when I lived in Chicago. Best Buy had a sale on tv dvds and their ad listed the Monkees for $30. I had no idea that it was a mistake and bought both seasons for $60. When I was checking out the cashier said it was a misprint but they would honor the price. When I got home I looked them up to see what a big mistake it was. I see them pop up on ebay every once in a while. You can find them on ioffer.com but I think most of those are bootleg copies (probably copied off the box sets since they are pre-nocopy dvds).

I am a big fan of "The Devil and Peter Tork" episode. It's one of those episodes that is kind of a heart string tugger like "Monkee Mother", "I've Got A Little Song Here", and "The Christmas Show". It's also hilarious when they kookoo over the word hell.

Thanks, MissOleson! I hadn't heard that rendition of I Wanna Be Free in ages.

Oh boy, Pleasant Valley Sunday is one of those songs that takes me right back to a summer afternoon in my childhood. And it was cool to hear the definitive live version of Peter Percival Patterson's Pet Pig Porky. Any fans of The Monkees here? 70708

Well, I was watching the rerun of "The Devil and Peter Tork" a couple of months ago and they cut the "hell" part out. That kind of made me mad because that really is one of the best parts of the episode.

Hey, Rob, have you ever seen this yet?

It always amuses me. Smile

Although, this one amuses me a little more.

I figure The Beatles can be included in this thread as that is what The Monkees were based on, anyway. Smile

I looked up the complete series on ioffer and found a seller with the series as it is on the dvd sets. Its worth checking out. You get copies of the set without the box or sleeves, but its a cheap way to get the series without trying to copy someone elses. ioffer is owned by ebay, so if you pay by paypal they are pretty reliable. I bought a couple of things on there and was pretty happy with what I got.

http://www.ioffer.com/i/the-monkees-complete-tv-series-dvd-+-bonus-58-episodes-191005892

I also saw the sydicated version of The Devil and Peter Tork on Antenna TV in Milwaukee this last spring. Its too bad they cut so much stuff out because newer fans miss out. The syndication package did add something in Too Many Girls (Davy and Fern). Apparently, the censors in the 60's thought Fern was showing too much cleavage so they blurred her bust. By the time the series went into reruns, they changed their mind and she is unblurred. Its funny because the set shows the original airings so this can only be seen in syndication. By today's standards the amount of skin she shows would be considered too little by the networks.

It must be close to your concert date. Have fun.

I am now a major fan of the Monkees....for some of y'all who are clueless they were a clean and decent band in the 1960's and had their own hilarious show. The members are Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, and Mickey Dolenz. I thought I would post this cute and adorable video. I love how they sing off key and act like they didn't rehearse it! LOL! (Informing you of this because they sing much better than in this video! LOL!) The dogs are adorable.

Here's another music video that is more "normal". lol!

I used to watch reruns as a kid and later in high school when they had them on VHL. There were the new Monkees in the 80's, but they stunk, lol. I have a CD and a book on them.
