Prayers for employment Empty
PostSubject: Prayers for employment   Prayers for employment EmptyWed Jan 09, 2013 12:25 pm

Hello all,

I hope you'll pray for my employment situation. I've been trying to find a job outside the house since last year, but nothing has popped yet. A couple of interviews, but no offers. I finally kicked the job search into high gear, but it looks like I might have to hire a recruiter if I don't find something soon. I face a few challenges: I've been out of the workforce for over nine years--even though I've worked from home for the past five; I don't have a degree; I am hoping for hours that will still allow me to juggle mommy things. Oh, and computerized application systems don't help either. Many use keyword software, so if the computer doesn't spot what it's looking for, you never even get a call. I have over 10 years retail experience and more than 5 years of office management experience, but when I applied for work in the cash office of a retail outlet, it took the computer a whole two hours to spit out my application and send me a form email that I wasn't the right candidate. scratchead

Thanks. I appreciate your prayers.

Cheryl

I feel your pain, re the computer, it's also very impersonal. You never meet anyone unless a word or phrase catch's their attention.

I will pray for you, keep trying close to home. I worked at a doctor's office and many times women would drop off resumes in person, in part to give a face to the resume, but sometimes certain business's don't want the paper, smaller tend to be kinder.

I remember my son at 18, looking for just a job in a store, he would spend over an hour at Target on their computer (so they know it's you and not someone helping you I heard) and then never hear anything. And the psych tests some put on them!! Maybe after 60 questions asking the same thing, I am a little batty. : )
He did get his first job walking in a store and they were obviously lacking in help, one cashier, etc. and the manager said, "See me tomorrow" Luck and perseverance.

Thanks to you both.

One of the applications I filled out had 72 questions. A bit much to work in a store, if you ask me.

Mini-update: Have a potential opportunity to clean houses for a woman with an established business. Not what I was looking for, but I think I'll call her to see what the hours are. Mother's hours would be ideal.

My friend did that years ago because she had a daughter at home most of the day, she had one during the week, one on weekend. It worked for a few years. She had one "under the table" too I think when people heard about it.

I did CNA home care type work when my girls were small or in grade school, so I could make my own hours. They used to call me outside of those hours anyway but I would just say No.
Money wasn't great, but I also babysat, in my home and out. One women went to my kids school and her little girl I would watch and then she would get her after school once a week. It was about 60-80 dollars depending what you charge.

Spring is finally here, the lovely pink blooms on the "spray" tree outside my window are gone leaving a beautiful willow.

Prayers for sure Cheryl. I am working so much now, but so thankful for the work. Cleaning does work for Mom's, but I know its difficult in its own way too.
Hope things will all fall together in a way that will work out for the whole family. Keep us updated.

Thanks Teresa. I will. I'm just putting together my finishing touches on the information I need to bring with me. I'm nervous, but more anxious about how a return to work would affect the girls than securing a job.

Yes, good luck to you, Cheryl! You'll do great, I'm sure. And it will be an adjustment for the family, I'm sure, but my guess is you've raised some strong young ladies and they'll come out just fine. yes Kids are so resilient. Thumbsup How many hours would you be working? (Or did you say that already---sorry!)

Thanks Amy. I think it went well. I'm not good talking about myself, unless it's writing.

The girls are actually bugging me to go back to work. Mostly because our finances haven't allowed for a lot of extras lately. Just found out we probably have to replace the roof, so even fewer extras are in our future if I don't find work.

I'm willing to work part-time, but I really would like full-time. It's with a staffing agency, so if I have a long-term assignment, then I would be working for a few months and then would need to get a new assignment after that if it wasn't a temp-to-hire situation. It could be fun working different places.

I have to take some assessment testing online, and then I should be all set to go. It might take a bit to be placed, but at least there's a plan.
