Apple Cider....yum!!

Well, this week has been a very busy one for me. There is an apple orchard that my Grandpa planted, but is not getting used anymore. So, there are a ton of apples going to waste on the ground, and on the trees. I went with my brother, and we filled the back of the truck nearly to the top with apples from the ground. Then, we went to a friends house, who has a cider press, and in the last three days we have pressed 54 gallons of cider! All the teenagers in the familys have been doing, so we've been having a great time. Though, most of us now don't care if we ever see another apple! lol
But, Christmas time, when we curl up with a cup of cider, I'm sure we'll be glad we did it!! Bad thing is, we're going back at it tomorrow, if we can get more apples. I know one thing, after yesterday, I was sticky up one arm and down the other!

That sounds like so much fun! A lot of work, but a lot of fun, too. We've been doing applesauce, apple butter and apple pie filling - along with apple muffins and apple turnovers......Must be that apple time of the year!

I would LOVE a glass of apple cider, thank you very much!

We've been making apple pie filling, apple sauce, and drying them, too, with the apples from the trees.

That sounds like fun, Farmer Girl. I'd love a glass of apple cider. The way things are going this year, we'll probably be too busy to make it to the cider mill. And I've been craving fresh, warm doughnuts and cider too.

We had an apple tree in our backyard when I was growing up, but it wasn't cared for and it just produced apples that weren't worth eating. Anyhow, I remember when I was a kid, gathering up some of those apples and taking them into the garage and using my dad's vice grip to try and make apple cider with them. Needless to say, it was pretty nasty! The things you do when you're a kid, lol. At least I survived it.

And you guys are making me hungry talking about all of the things you've been making with apples.

I've never made an apple head doll, but my best friend made me one years ago, when I was younger. That thing sat behind the sink on the bathroom counter for years!

That's funny, Pam, about you trying to make apple cider in a vice! I think our bodys can survive more then we give them credit for! lol

That's a cute apple head doll. The one my friend made me, she put the head on a water bottle, with beans in the bottom to weight it down. Then, they sewed a dress, apron, and a bonnet on her. She was holding a little paper basket with red play-dough apples.

We went to the cider mill on Saturday! It was a perfect crisp, sunny fall morning! It's called "Uncle John's Cider Mill"

Hey, Amy, that's not far from one of my uncle's Big Boy restaurants in St. John's. I've driven by that cider mill on the way to the restaurant, as well as to visit my grandma who used to live in a nursing home right across from the restaurant. What a small world!

Oh cool! Yeah, it's a pretty popular place, out of the cider mills in our area. We live in the city, so you have to kind of travel a distance to get to a great cider mill!

Same here. The closest decent one is a 30 - 45 minute drive from here. But well worth it. Those doughnuts just won't stop calling my name. I may have to make some time to drive out to the nearest one this weekend, lol.

We found actually that it was less 'fun' this time around actually. There's really not much to 'do' anymore now that the kids are grown! My oldest is off to college, so we took my 13 year old and his 13 yr old cousin, and they were pretty bored. I enjoyed just walking around (and doing the gift shop ), but you know how teens are---they'd rather be home gaming than watching how apples are turned into cider! In fact I captured a picture of just how 'exuberant' my son looked while watching the process. I'll have to post it later.

Yeah, Devin probably wouldn't even go with us anymore. And I'd rather not make him go than have some sulky teenager hanging around acting like it is torture hanging around us. :haha: At least Kelsey enjoys doing things like that still.

I'd love some cider. I haven't had any yet this year.

None of us care if we ever see another apple.
All together we pressed 90 gallons of cider. I think that should last us a while, lol. But we did divde it up between two good sized familys, so maybe not.
