PostSubject: Blind Journey   Blind - Blind Journey EmptyMon Jan 05, 2009 9:12 pm

Can someone tell me what is up with Joe Kagen and Hester Sue. Why is she so hostile toward him? I was watching a behind the scenes episode and there was this one scene where Joe Kagen is leaving and his son comes out and asks if he could "wait up" when Joe is leaving he asks"Arent you going to wish me luck?" and a perso I could have sworn was Hester Sue said "Good Luck Joe Kagen" I was thinking maybe this could relate to Hester Sue's hostility during the Blind Journey.

I Love this episode because it is one of the few episodes that Mrs. Oleson actually learns a lesson, and Nells stands up to her!

Robin, the episode you are talking about is from season 4, called, "The Fighter." Hester Sue is playing a different character. She is playing the wife of Joe Kagan. We are introduced to the character of Hester Sue in season 5, in the episode of "Blind Journey." She was just playing 2 different characters. Once she began playing Hester Sue, she continued with the character through season 8.

I don't feel Harriet is a racist. She is prejudice against people who aren't as wealthy as she is or who are different from her. A racist is someone who hates a person or group of people because of the color of their skin. I never got the feeling Harriet hated anyone. She looked down her nose at them because she had more money; and being a product of her times, she probably saw the Indians as savages and blacks as ignorant people who weren't equal to the whites.

Now, I'm not saying either is right, but I feel racist is too harsh a term for her.

I always felt that Harriet coldn't hate anyone. She was a little "hard" as a person, like Nellie, but at least, her god feelings always surfaces and she could go along with all kind of people. Just imagine what a punch for her pride must have been to work in a saloon just to pay her children's school....But she put prejudices and pride aside and she bravely worked as a saloon girl...

It must have so hard on her do that. It shows what she'd do so her kids would have the best.

I think Harriet just you know maybe judges people. But then she turns around and learns it was wrong.

Harriet overcomes three prejudeces by the end of the serries;African-Americans, Jews, and people w/ physical differences ( Little Lou). She didn't have a problerm with Olga's leg. That was cool. I think I have beaten this topic to death and I apoligize if people are geting sick of it. If you want, I could make a Harriet character study thread, so this one stays on topic.

Good idea, Harrietfan! a Harriet character study thread will be O.K. Of course we can open similar ones for each chacarter of the show. And yes...you're right! Harriet NEVER said a word about Olga's leg or Anna stuttering . It was Nellie who didn't like these two girls.

There are some bloopers on youtube that go with this episode. Michael comes through the door to tell Joe he is welcomed in church, and he has a sheet over his head like a ghost.
I watched this tonight and realized the drawing of Joe is from this episode...part 2 I believe. I really like this one, especially how the town helped the blind school stay open.

I think the blind school should have been named The Walnut Grove School For The Blind. It was nice of Mrs.Oleson to donate the materials needed to fix the place up, but she went to far in calling it "her" school and naming it after her.

This episode really highlighted Katherine MacGregor's "Harriet." She was just hilarious from beginning to end. With getting her heels on her shows ripped off, to her primping to meet Hester Sue, to going across the river in the sling. Excellent showcase of Harriet Oleson.

But boy, what a way to move a bunch of blind children. Nowdays, there would be permission slips, helicopter parents, school admins, charter bus companies. Back then it was, "We're going to walk to the next state with a couple wagons. Here, grab ahold of this rope so we don't lose you."

I'm glad, Mrs. Olsen had change of heart. It was good thing she went on the journey.

The rig, look like fun to go across.
