Teresa, did you hear about this? Minnesota had an outbreak linked to peanut butter!!

Who would have thought---peanut butter???? Best to stick to top brands, don't you think. I'm a JIF girl, myself. Wink

Thing is . . . last time, even top brands were making people sick. I remember the shelves being completely empty where one of the more expensive brands was supposed to be. (Skippy, maybe?) So, a pricier brand doesn't guarantee us anything. Blue

I remember when peanut butter was pulled off the shelves here.......You would go down the aisle and there would be ALL kinds of jelly, but no peanut butter to go with it....The only peanut butter on the shelves was the organic kind....you know, the kind you have to stir because of all the peanut oil floating at the top?!?!? :sad5:

It wasn't Skippy.......Some brand named King Nut......Never heard of it myself......

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – An outbreak of salmonella food poisoning that has sickened at least 399 people and put 70 or more into the hospital has been linked to peanut butter, officials in Minnesota said on Friday.
Officials from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the Minnesota Department of Health said they were issuing a product advisory for King Nut brand creamy peanut butter after finding the Salmonella typhimurium bacteria in a big institutional-size jar of the spread.
"The Minnesota cases have the same genetic fingerprint as the cases in a national outbreak that has sickened almost 400 people in 42 states," the health department said in a statement.

I don't think I've heard of King Nut, either.

Skippy was one of the contaminated peanut butters last time, Maggie. :fyi: (Isn't it sad that it's hard to keep straight which contamination we're talking about?? Too many to keep straight!)

I wonder what the contamination was the last time with peanut butter? I just thought 'salmonella' was an odd thing linked with peanut butter...you usually associate that with meats and poultry, right?

Yes, I heard about this on our local news. It's not a brand that is sold in the grocery stores. Companies order it in bulk. Unfortunately, facilities like nursing homes had used this brand.

I would think that too, Amy. It's like nothing is ever guaranteed to be safe. No Very scary.

That's sad that this affected many in nursing homes! I mean it's sad whomever it affects, but still.

This was on our local news last night...apparently the case of 399 people affected many states, and 20 were right here in Michigan, one right in our county.

Looks like they expanded it more from the article I listed above Maggie's post. Kellogg's did a voluntary recall on some crackers, cookies and such.... Huh?

We use skippy. The only kind we used to use was peter pan....lol....my mom says when her and my dad got married he said the only kind of peanut butter allowed in the house was peter pan. Then, we got Salmonella from it when they had that big outbreak a few years ago. NOT FUN!! We didn't know what it was, and when we did find out what it was, we didn't know what we were eating that was giving it to us. The reason we kept getting it back, was because we would all get over it, then we didn't feel like making a big lunch so we ate PB&J's. Then, one day my dad called from work. He said "It's the Peanut Butter!!" He had seen it in the news. Just as he called, I finised eating a sandwich I had made myself. Sure enough, within a few hours I was sick as a dog!

I don't want Salmonella again. It was the worst sick I'd been in a long time, and I havn't been that sick since.

ps/.........we don't use peter pan anymore. grinsmiley

I saw on the news today where they were telling people not to eat anything made with peanut butter. They were pulling all peanut butter crackers, cookies (Famous Amos, included) etc. off the shelves and racks in stores.

Spring is finally here, the lovely pink blooms on the "spray" tree outside my window are gone leaving a beautiful willow.

Farmer Girl, what an awful experience! No wonder you changed peanut butter brands!

Alice, I saw that on the news, too....And I just bought a package of Little Debbie's Nutty Bars. I'm too paranoid to eat them now, though. I hate to waste food, but I really don't want to get sick.
