Cairns could expect to be battered by horrific, terrifying winds for 10 hours either side of the time category five Yasi makes landfall, expected at 10pm (AEST) on Wednesday.
Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from low-lying areas as the cyclone approaches, with its full fury expected to hit the region around Cairns sometime after 10pm today.
Cairns has a population of over 150,000. Cairns Airport will close at 10am (AEDT) today.
Yasi is expected to be Queensland's worst cyclone, covering something approaching twice the physical size of Cyclone Larry, which devastated Innisfail in 2006 and left a $1.5 billion damage bill.

This will be bad! Yikes

ABC news says:

“Queenslanders have been told to prepare themselves for a terrifying 24 hours as the "most catastrophic storm ever" takes aim at heavily populated areas of the state's north. Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi was upgraded to category five this morning as the weather bureau warned it was likely to be "more life-threatening" than any storm seen in Australia in living memory. The storm's size and power dwarfs Cyclone Tracy, which hit Darwin in 1974, killing 71 people.”

“There's still potential for it to become stronger ... as a strong category five we could see wind gusts in excess of 320 kilometres an hour, which is just horrific" – Forecaster Gordon Banks

Fears of total devastation to the banana and sugar cane crops arose as the storm struck land. Initial estimates stated that damage to sugar cane alone could reach A$505 million.

Officials stated that some residents may be without power for more than a month.

Number of buildings without power over 170,000.

OK from an email

Good afternoon wonderful people

Yesterday we joined together in prayer at 5:00pm for God’s intervention against the cyclone that was heading towards Queensland, Australia last night. Due to the size and path of the cyclone, devastation and loss of life was guaranteed. People were understandably very concerned and in fear for their lives. Remember, this was a category 5 cyclone heading straight towards largely populated areas.

It’s time to praise God my friends!!! The cyclone did hit Australia and there is large amounts of damage to property BUT there has been no loss of life or serious injury at all. The cyclone did not hit the most populated towns to the degree anticipated!!! Reporters have said several times “This is a miracle!” and indeed it is!!! It is a miracle we prayed for and received!!!!

I believe God responded to the prayers of His people, and I want to thank you for joining your faith with others!!! All praise to God!!!

Finally one little thing that I reckon is just so incredible and so cool. There was not only NO LOSS OF LIFE, but there was NEW LIFE born in the midst of the cyclone. Three babies were born in that area including one in an evacuation centre!!! There just happened to be a mid-wife on holiday from England in the very evacuation centre where a 9 month pregnant woman was. God is amazing!!! The baby was born without any problem and all are well.

I ask you to keep on praying for the many who have lost so much, including those who have lost their livelihood, homes and possessions. Please pray protection on everyone as the cyclone continues inland and as the clean-up commences.

Bless you heaps and I pray your faith is stirred to pray and believe for God’s intervention in situations!!!
