Eeekk, I'm already nervous...

Hey all, as you know, I recently turned 40 and so I went in for my annual exam. While there, I got info. on getting a mammogram, my first one.

I had the paper sitting around the house for a week or so but today I finally called up and set up the appointment for May. I am already nervous about it but I know that it has to be done!

I hope its not too bad!

That's right Misti. I am sooo not looking foward to that myself.... after working for months and months on breast cancer cases... I'm so paranoid... lol.

But you're right, it has to be done. I'm sure you will pass w/ flying colors!

It isn't the most comfortable thing, but since it will keep you healthy it is a good idea to get it done. I've had them since I turned 32 and found my first lump. Luckily, the lump was a result of having fibrocystic breasts and nothing serious.

My mother died of cancer, which started in her breast, so they started my annual mammograms early. Since I am petite and small chested, my greatest challenge is getting those little suckers onto the plate enough for them to take a picture of them. But, having kids is a lot more painful, so I just think about labor and it doesn't really seem so bad when they squish my boobs into the vice.

A comment from one of the nurses has really stuck with me. She told me I was a joy to have around because I didn't complain about it at all. She said she had some of the most vile patients coming through. She acknowledged what an unpleasant experience it is, but she said it made her job much easier to have a patient like me who took it all in stride.

And to think, that was the year she had to retake some of the pictures because I was still breastfeeding and she couldn't get the right angle.

At one of my last check-ups my dr. mentioned to me that I should have my first mammogram. Something about how they like you to go once in your 30's so that they have something to base future mammograms against. I said, "Sure, I'll make an appt. after my knee surgery." That was 2 1/1 yr's ago. But hey, I figure this is still after my knee surgery.

No Misti, but we have the problem of them being squashed like pancakes and some good pain.

I think men ought to have their own "mammogram test" (I won't say on which part) so they can experience the joy! Hey, why is it women have all the "fun" in life and men don't? If you could wave a magic wand, what would you want them to experience? I say let them experience giving birth! Heck, let's give them the whole nine month experience!

Well, we already have prostate exams. Let's just say that it involves a doctor, a rubber glove, and something that most of us wouldn't think of doing without dinner and a movie first.

Oh, childbirth can't be all that bad. I've seen it on TV sitcoms. The woman goes into the delivery room, the doctor and nurses make a few hilarious jokes, and the whole thing's over in ten minutes. Badda-boom, badda-bing.

Besides, I stubbed my toe once. Now that's real pain, ladies.
