PostSubject: One room school   One room school EmptyThu Aug 30, 2007 9:20 pm

We are members of the Ohio Historical Society (until tomorrow when the membership expires), and we just received their newsletter. There is a one room school house that was just put on the National Register of Historic Places. It is in Marion County, which is 2-3 counties north of Columbus. According to the article, "it was one of 130 one-room schoolhouses that once served Marion County. The schools were located about two miles apart so that most students had to walk no more than a mile each way. Built in 1897, the Linn School served students through eighth grade. School sessions consisted of a single 72-day term in the winter. Students left school in the spring in time to work on planting crops and returned after the fall harvest."

I thought that was interesting that there were so many schools in one county. If other Ohio counties had that many that would explain why there are still many one room school houses around in Ohio. Most of them are in a field and being used to store hay bales, but they are still standing. Most interesting was the 72-day term. Wouldn't kids today love that!

I know I would've loved a 72 day term when I was in grade school!

Thanks for sharing Lori, it was interesting.

We have a one room school house in our town. It was moved to the Historical part of town near the old jail, and an old pioneer home. There seem to be a lot around in the country and you can visit this one and have the history told to you by a woman dressed like a teacher from the time era. You get to sit in the desks and see just how it was back then.................Thumbsup

We also had these "one room schools" in Argentina. When my grandpa lived in a countryside, he attended one of them. Nowadays. This school still stands but it keeps working, since they've add other romms to it, just to make a modern school. grinsmiley However, I should like to see one of these schools changed in a museum.

I'm sure the kids nowadays would love a 72 day term. Unfortunately wouldn't be so good for them, since farming in families is not too common now. So, all these kids would spend most of the year watching tv, playing video games, and eating junk food. Oh my!! lol

Yes..I agree. But I think that boys and girls should be able to be a little more time with their parents, speaking about how things were when they were little and stuff like that. Young people is too used to think that things were always the way they are now, and they don't know how much work and sacriffice their parents , grand-parents and great-grandparens must offer to life, for the world could be like they knows it .

I wouldn't imagine the big cities would have any left unless one was preserved for educational purposes. I grew up in rural central Ohio, and there are several brick school houses still standing. Some have been converted to houses, but the majority are in fields and used for storing hay bales. I wonder if one room school houses were even used in the cities. That would be interesting to find out.

ah...those were the days, small towns and one room school houses. It's truly incredible when you look over the past century and see just how radically America has changed, both in appearance in culture. Word has it that there still exist a handful of such one room schools in the rural west.....and I know that they are still prevelant in the Amish culture. Schools these day are far too large, in my opinion, and I am not a big fan of the curriculum in general. I'd be much more apt these days to home school my children if at all possible.
