| A grandpa sits in his rocking chair, his grandchildren at his feet Story time was something to look forward to, it always was a treat But tonight was different for some reason Perhaps because it was the Halloween season “Author, Author!” the youngest one chanted And soon his plead to start the story was granted Grandpa took a deep breath and started his tale All eyes on him waiting to hear every detail
“Back in the time of the Little House years People didn’t seem to have as many fears But I can tell you a story however That will change your mind forever and ever”
It was back to school time for Annabelle and her friends All stumbling into the schoolhouse as the summer ends “It would be a third miracle,” says Annabelle,”If summer was extended Even for just a few days, it would be so splendid” Her little brother chimed in, “You just come to school with an angry heart” “You didn’t want your sweet sixteen summer romance to have to depart”
“Stop it, you little brat!” she said to no avail “He loves me, he loves me not,” he chided acting out every little detail Annabelle’s eyes grew wilder and wilder Then her expression suddenly became milder She turned to her best friend with great sincerity And asked her to retell her Halloween dream with clarity Her friend looked puzzled then caught her eye “Can your brother be trusted with secrets?” she did reply That was all it took to get the “little brat” off track “We’ll all have to make silent promises never to tell and that’s a pact” They all agreed and the story began to be told And soon, the tale of whatever happened to the class of 56 began to unfold It seemed one day all the children were at a picnic near a big family tree And something was seen moving in the woods that they did unfortunately see It was big and hairy, unlike any animal they’d seen before And it frightened all of them down to the core That night as they sat celebrating the end of summer by the campfire Howls from woods could be heard, growing higher and higher Then, out from the woods jumped the werewolf of Walnut Grove Everyone sprung to their feet as if they had just sat down on a hot stove They ran and ran until they could run no more And soon found themselves standing at the preacher’s door They knocked and knocked to no avail Then they saw his carefully written letter and began to wail “The preacher takes a wife this Thursday Night,” said the note “Come and see us united in Winoka” was all that he wrote “What should we do now?” one child asked Maybe the faith healer, Mr. Edwards, should be our next task.” They all agreed and took off running Toward the home of a man that most people in town were always shunning But on their way there, they stumbled upon a second spring and crossed connections With two groups of children going off in different directions Some found themselves waiting for the return of Mr. Edwards at his home The others wandered through the woods not really wanting to roam One little boy, Thomas King, was shaking so severely And wasn’t thinking all that clearly He suddenly said aloud “I hope darkness is my friend For I really don’t want my life to end” His words frightened them all as they stood there silently Not for long, however for a bush behind them began to shake violently “The King is Dead!” poor Tom declared They all were so very scared..
Grandpa paused to look at his grandkids expression He could tell the story had made an impression He told them it was their turn to finish the story For he did not want to take all the glory They begged and the pleaded for him to tell them more But he just said, “May we make them proud” as his feet rose to the floor Let’s just say without a closure to this tale All the children that night went to bed looking sort of pale
