Spybot help? Empty
PostSubject: Spybot help?   Spybot help? EmptyMon Jan 28, 2008 12:59 pm

When my computer crashed early in January, I re-installed everything - including Spybot. Since then, every time I've tried to run Spybot it shuts my computer down, once it has gotten just about half way through the scan. It doesn't give any warning . . . and it doesn't matter if I'm actively using the computer during the scan, or if the computer is just sitting there. So, I un-installed Spybot, and re-installed it, to see if there may have been a slight error during the installation. But it's still doing the same thing. Anybody have any ideas? I really want to be able to use Spybot again, because it's fabulous for getting rid of spyware.

I use the free AVG. You can go to www.grisoft.com and get it.....it is NOT right out in the open tho....they have it buried since they want you to buy the version they have......but, you should be able to find it, it works great on viruses and zaps them....without shutting down your computer. Okay.......I did some research and found out what the problem probably is.

I do have AVG, Rhonda - and you're right, it's wonderful for viruses and trojans! I love it! But Spybot removes tracking ware from your computer. It's relatively harmless, but it really slows the computer down. The last time I ran Spybot, in December, it found around 100 tracking devises that it could remove. And I barely go anywhere on the internet.

So....it turns out that Spybot is CPU intensive, and one of my fans on my laptop has been running slow lately. Apparently, it's running *just* slow enough that it can't cool the laptop enough while Spybot is running, and it shuts itself down to protect the processors, etc. Thankfully, I found the heatsink and fan that I need on ebay for an excellent deal!

Since I went to McAfee with Comcast, bought One-Click Cleanup, and used Firefox, I've had zero problems with spyware, adware, any of that. Plus no loss of pc speed. My last test at Speedtest.net put me at about 30,000 kbps d/l speed, and you can't get much better than that. I just don't download much, and if I do, I talk to ppl who have already d'l'ed it to see if they've had any problems.
