| I'm not really very interested in it, because it isn't written by LMM - Or based on any ideas she had written, and just not gotten to before she passed away. Here's a link to an article in the Edmonton Journal, about the book: Before Green GablesIt was released, partly, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the creation of Anne Shirley's character. But, having read LMM's journals......... and seeing how protective she was of Anne's character. . . . I don't really think that she'd approve of a stranger writing a prequel about Anne's life before Green Gables. I think she had intended for a bit of mystery to remain about Anne's early life. So....Anyway, I'm not interested in it - But I know that a lot of people are going to be VERY interested.Oh - and here's a link to an Amazon site where you can see the cover:The Cover | |

| After reading about this (thanks for the article Savannah), I don't agree with the idea. Penguin knew that there would be controversy going in and I'm sure they are only seeing dollar signs for this project. While Montgomery did drop some hints as to Anne's past, only she knows what she intended Anne's past to be; and any attempt by another author to create a past for Anne distorts Montgomery's vision of that past and the character that she created. When Roger Leigh McBride, and others since him, went about creating the Rocky Ridge Years and other stories about Laura's family, they had history and documentation that allowed them to bring their characters to life. But in Anne's case, there is no such documentation because she is totally fictional.
This reminds me of when the TV writers went back and created "The Thorn Birds: The Missing Years", which reunited Ralph de Bricassart and Meggie Cleary many years before they actually reunited in the book, "The Thorn Birds" by Colleen McCullough. "The Missing Years" was a mini-series that aired in 1996. McCullough was against this. My only guess is she sold rights that allowed them to do it. And when they wrote "The Missing Years", it totally altered the events that took place in the original mini-series and novel.
Even though Anne is a fictional character, her past influences who she becomes in the future; so if they create a past for her that wasn't what Montgomery intended, they too, change the character in the future. Gosh, can you tell I'm a writer? LOL! | |

No, you're exactly right Cheryl and I couldn't agree with you more. It doesn't seem right to me either. So, do you know, Cheryl, if Kevin is actually doing this movie then? It doesn't seem like something he'd have an interest in either, out of respect to LMM. “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

This was exactly my thought. LMM's descendants agreed to the project - but they also benefit financially from it.
