| I was thinking about you last night, when I saw an episode of Andy Griffith that I'd never seen before. I haven't seen you around lately. Have you made it over to our back-up board? | |

- It was "The Return of Barney Fife". By the end of the episode, for the first time in watching the series, I really wanted to stomp the writers for doing that to Barney and Thelma Lou. I couldn't believe that they'd do that to a couple that everyone knew belonged together.
You picked a good one to miss. I have a book called The Andy Griffith Show by Richard Kelly, and he cites this as their worst episode. He says that one of the real charms of the show is that nothing permanently bad ever really happened, but that the writers seemed to throw that idea out the window in this ep. Also, he hates the way it ends. Barney loses the only woman he's ever loved, but after a few compliments from some girl he went to high school with, he perks right up and is as good as new. Let me haul down that book off my shelf and give you Mr. Kelly's exact words: "Barney has been turned into an absurd puppet, manipulated by a lethal script. The failure of this episode is in direct proportion to the success of all the previous ones in establishing the myth of permanence." Youch. Wish he wouldn't beat around the bush. - Savannah wrote:

Heh-heh! That reminds me of my Aunt Ann. She was a big Andy Griffith fan, and every day I'd ask her if she saw the previous night's episode. She'd say, "Yes, but it was a rerun." Umm, Ann, the show went out of production in 1968, so reruns are pretty much all we're gonna get.

Hey Cheryl! I'm still working on the first chapter. It's taking a while. Out of all of them, this is the one that requires the most tinkering. How's your writing going?

| Writing is going well from a non-fiction perspective, not so well from a fiction perspective. I'm now a staff writer for the monthly ezine Writer2Writer. My articles will offer time management tips for my fellow writers and they will appear every other month.
Still working on edits to The Sisterhood, which I've determined may take the rest of my life. LOL! Also have a short story set in Mexico that I am trying to polish up to submit to Wolfmont Publishing. And about a million and one other things I want to do.
BTW, don't know if you heard, but the creators of NaNoWriMo have a new project called ScriptFrenzy. It starts in June and instead of writing a novel, you write a script. I might participate if I have the time.
Thanks for asking. Tell Snowden I say hi.

I"ll have to check out the book you mentioned. It sounds interesting. I haven't seen every episode of The Andy Griffith Show yet, but as it stands, I'd have to agree with the author. I never thought I'd see an episode of AG that I so incredibly disliked. But it was kind of like a "bad accident" affect . . . . . I couldn't look away. I don't know.....maybe I was waiting for Thelma Lou to suddenly say that she'd just been joking. - Rob wrote:

| Oh! Last night, I was watching "The Long, Long Trailer" while I was cross stitching. I was looking down, reading the pattern, when I was SURE that I heard Floyd talking. I looked up, and there was Howard McNear! I've seen that movie several times, but never saw that particular scene - or just never payed attention. He was just so funny! | |

| That voice is very distinctive, whether it was before his stroke or after. Though Howard was one of those actors who could make me laugh just by being onscreen. He didn't even have to talk. | |
