PostSubject: Son   Son EmptyThu Nov 06, 2008 10:03 pm

Yesterday we had an IEP ( Individual Education Plan) meeting for my oldest son William who is 4 1/2. He had been in speech for 1 1/2 years. Well anyway my husband, his speech teacher, his pre-school teacher, and myself were all concerned that he might be autistic. And they ran some tests.

Well it turns out that he has autistic like tendencies. So Dec. 1 he starts his special education pre-school which is on the same campus where he was going to speech. The bus will pick him up from his pre-school and bus him to the special class and back again.

Here is the funny thing, my husband and I talked about buying him a new backpack for when he starts, this morning William asked me "can I have a new backpack for when i go on the school bus?" No one had talked to him about it yet. Could he have ESP?

Edwina,
Thank you for sharing your story with us. Before I was a stay-at-home mom, I was a Speech Pathologist. I worked in Early Childhood Special Education programs. I worked with a wide range of children, many of them were autistic. Some were higher functioning than others. Did they diagnose your son with Asperger's? It's on the autism spectrum, but it's a higher functioning child. If you ever have any questions, or just want to talk, please feel free to pm me at any time. It's great that your son is getting the early intervention that he needs. He will make great strides in his new class. He will be in my prayers.

I'm glad to hear your sons is getting the help he needs---good for you, Edwina. I'm sure you know about Jenny McCarthy's story about her son by now, but if you haven't read her book, it would be a good idea. There is a lot to be done regarding the diet for children of autism. Good luck to you all, and too cute about William and his backpack! Wink

Did they diagnose your son with Asperger's? No they said he was too social. The physiologist was uncomfortable giving him an exact diagnosis. If anything they think he is borderline to moderate.

Having a special needs child myself, I am a firm believer in early intervention. That is great that he will be going to the special preschool. Let us know what kind of backpack he picks.

I'm a bit late catching up with this thread but was interested to read of your son's diagnosis, Edwina. My son also has learning difficulties and finally, after 5 years monitoring him, he was finally diagnosed by an educational psychologist as having Aspergers. He's 13 now and at a mainstream school but when he was 5 he was in line to go to a special school but didn't get a place. Instead, his school brought in a classroom assistant who was with him for 5 years, until he left to go to secondary school just over a year ago. She was fabulous with him and helped so much. I was dreading him changing school. His primary school was a small one and now he's in a much bigger one but seems to be coping well. He has an assistant for 2 hours a day, which is better than nothing and though he'll never be top of the class (except in Maths, which he excels at!) he's holding his own.

I hope your 'wee man' enjoys his school and if he's anything like my Ryan, he'll have all the teachers wrapped around his little finger!

William picked out his backpack, lunch box, and thermos today. He picked a Spiderman backpack that has a matching wallet, a Starwars lunch box, and a blue camo thermos. He told me he wants a sandwich, chips, cookies, and a banana for lunch. :twist:
